Just recently my 22r has started to act up. She fires great, runs beautifully above 2500 rpm. Below that she has this really wierd tick and the sloppiest idle ever. It acts like its starving, but idles at 1100-1500 rpm and randomly moves between those.

So, i believe the tick is my fan becasue its got a broken blade and ill have the new one tomorrow i hope.

The idle problem reminds me of when an o2 sensor goes out but i dont think i have one. Tell me if i do. Even when the motor is under a load itll bounce between 11 and 15. Which is like being in 4lo and first and randomly tapping the gas.

So does this explain it enough to answer? sorry if its hard to understand, right now i have a sun+lots of water+no glasses headache.

And she has Autolite O.E. replacement plugs and BWD Performance wires just done maybe 6weeks ago. They look fine, and in my dads opinion, amazing for as much as i drive and wheel it. Just changed my oil, running 87 oc. gas and filled up yesterday.

Would it be easiest to just start by doing another tune up? With my employee discount i can do amazing things at amazing prices at Oriellys... I know all the tricks, and can get some amazing discounts.

Thanks,

Jayston Landon

So, not fuel injected if it is a 22r right?

Was it doing this prior to your tune up? What, if anything, did you do to the carb?

So....truck year, mileage, etc needs to be in the post to help.

It was running normal, besides my exhuast leak. Its an 84 Hilux with the 2.4L 22R. 160890 miles. I have done nothing to the carb besides add a spring to hold the throttle cable back because it would get stuck at 3500 and would go down by itself.

does the 22r have an electric choke? if so check that out.

Replaced fuel filter, searched for the o2 sensor and no luck. I imagine i do have an electric choke, i know it cost an arm and a leg to replace. Easiest way to check timing? Thanks for the help guys, its much appreciated!

dont think automatically if you pet random new parts on it, it will be fine
like the choke.
chokes dont just fail.

take off the air filter housing and look to see if it is operating properly. when cold it should be closed. as it gets warm, it should open. a full throttle sweep should open it.

if you cant do the timing, you may have trouble figuring out the choke.

but rest assured both are easier than pickin yer nose.

but with out the need of kleenex (or pants in your case :flipoff2: )

disconnect the vacuum hoses to the distributor once the engine has reached proper operating temperature.

hook up the timing light. shoot it at the big round whirly thing at the bottom of the engine.

if the dash lines up with the 5 on the timing cover your are good. if not loosen the distributor bolt, a 12mm and twist it one way or another to achieve 5 degrees btc.

I am not following what was done/not done.

You said 6 weeks agoyou replaced plugs/wires but then said your Dad thinks they look great even considering how much you wheel/drive??? How much can one drive in 6 weeks?

I guess what I am saying is that WHEN did this problem happen? WHY did you change the plugs/wires if there was no need? Did you add the spring at the same time?

You have a 24 year old carb...has it been cleaned/rebuilt?

Boy this brings back memories.

Ox sensor. Some 22r's did have them, mostly California issue. My 82 Hilux did. As said it will be sticking out of the exhaust manifold where it collects.

I had the same problem once that WristPin suggested. My flapper was stuck and pulling hot air off the exhaust manifold all the time. Truck ran like crap, but at all rpm.

I would start simple. Vacuum lines, air filter, valve adjustment, timing, loose plug wire, fuel filter, cracked dizzy cap, etc.

Alright, so i change my wires/plugs as a normal maintance thing. I drove around 1000 miles a week then, now that schools out its around 100 lol. So i have almost 5500 miles on the plugs and wires. According to the previous owner the engine was rebuilt around 6000 miles before i bought it, that means around 12000 miles now. This happened maybe 300 miles ago. Yes i put the spring on before i even changed the plugs and wires. The air filter is clean, and im getting ready to check the rest.
