Indeed. I went through the bonded title thing once and it actually went pretty smooth. The bond has to be for twice the value of the vehicle and it cost a few hundred bucks for the bond. Within three years, if a claim is made on the vehicle, the claimant can be compensated up to the bond value (as long as they have lots of proof to the claim). You are issued a title for the vehicle and the bond expires in three years. I think on newer vehicles it is a bigger deal but on old stuff, at least in Michigan, they were pretty easy going about it. They almost just issued me a title because of the pile of paperwork I had to back it up but at the last minute said "I guess you should go ahead and get a bond for it". Yeah, no problem, I was going to go throw my 300+ dollars in the street anyway, lol.
