Not again...1967 FJ45 LWB followed me home

More pics. I wouldn't call it progress....All I've really managed to do is disassemble further and buy more parts. What started off as a simple "get it on the road" is at the borderline of becoming a frame off resto:rolleyes:

Finally got every inch of wiring harness stripped out. I know agree....the enemy of LandCruisers isn't rust or lack of maintenance...its the infamous "PO". The whole wiring harness is going to Coolerman for a rebuild and to be used as a template for future FJ45 LPB harness rebuilds. I'm just not sure it hasn't already been hacked too much for the template...we'll see.

Here's the heater after blasting and powderdcoat, along with a ton of new parts from Toyota. The last pics are the new hardtop gaskets, including corner window gaskets straight from Japan.

I found what must be the original jack as I was cleaning under the seats. Also...the second pic is one reason why working on a 45 is so much fun....you can just throw everything in the bed to make more room!!

Lastly.....
does anyone have any leads on New taillights for the LPB?? I've tracked down a set of repro lenses, but my gaskets and housings are shot. I could cut down a set of 40 housings, but thats my last shot.

Does anyone have part numbers for the housings and gaskets?? I know they are not available in the US.....but I've got a few ideas;)

where did you find repro lenses and how much? thanks!

x2 on the location of where you found the headlight connector blocks (circled part).

Also, can you post more pics of the door panels? I was just in the process of doing that on my '64.

Shane, if you still need a selectro hub, contact Biscuit here on the board. He just took 1.5 of them off his 40 last month. I should know since he did it in my driveway!;p

As for someone interested in doing repro wiring harnesses, I have the harness that came out of Downey's 65swb. 21k original and flawless...to use for a template ONLY. Definitely NOT FOR SALE!

At Shanes suggestion I thought I would post pics and details of his harness repair/rebuild. I received the harnesses from Shane Friday and got them mounted to the wiring boards I had already built. I spent that evening un-taping them.

I found the main harness to be in bad shape. It is missing part of the drivers side branch, has had more than one major melt-down, is missing many terminals and has had several PO attempts at repairs. The pics show some of the damage I found.

Using a 1969 schematic I started by identifying what was missing/damaged. The entire brake light wiring was melted. This had damaged the turn signal wiring badly. The PO had made an attempt to 'repair' it by splicing in some new wire but as far as I could tell it would not have worked. The horn circuit was also toast. Though the headlight circuit was melted, it still functioned. The key switch wiring was a disaster waiting to happen. The main charge wire from the alternator through the amp meter to the starter was melted and had several areas where bare wire was exposed., it also had a splice that was just twisted together.

I know it sounds like the harness should just be pitched, but I decided to repair it as a test.

More to come...

Also while I'm thinking of it. Can someone with a working OEM wired interior light verify something for me? According to the schematic I have the dome light only works if the headlight switch is in position #1? Seems a bit strange to have to activate TWO switches to get light. Also does the light itself have a switch or was there a separate dash mounted switch. The harness I have has no provisions for such a switch.

Yes and yes. My domelight in the swb only comes on when the headlight switch is in the on position, and the domelight has it's own secondary switch on the light.

Thanks Mark. I figured the schematic was correct, just found it a bit odd. I don't think I will wire Shanes that way. ;) Straight to a fuse makes a lot more sense...

Here are some pics of the repairs so far.

Totally replaced the brake circuit from fuse box to rear harness connector.
Same for the Horn circuit. This circuit was 'upgraded' to use the later style 3 prong relay instead of the ring terminal version.
Last pic shows the replaced key switch wiring, brake light wiring, turn signal wiring and one leg of the charge circuit replaced with 8 ga wire.

Next will be the total rebuild of the drivers side wiring and the windshield wiring.

Last will be the semi-custom wiring for the rear chassis. We decided to replace all the OEM bullet connectors in the rear harness with Weather-Pak connectors to make the harness water proof. I'll also rewire the rear lights to include the ground on the housings and will add a detachable 4 pin towing harness.

Well I have a few more updates on Shane's harness.

First off, thanks to Merbesfield, Shane will have a more accurate repair of his harness. ;) Shane was missing most of the drivers side of his harness and I was going to have to guess at some measurements. Merbesfield told me he had a harness that was in good condition and offered to ship it too me. He was not correct, this harness is about the most pristine harness I have ever seen! It's got a few repairs done to it but everything is there and the repairs were done well. I was able to quickly add the missing sections to Shane's harness today.

Shane's main harness has been put back mostly stock but I added a few things to it for future changes.
One, I added a wire that will allow him to relocate the coil/igniter to the inner fender later if he decides to go to an FJ60 system. All he has to do is unplug the stock coil wire and plug it into the added wire to extend the switched hot to the inner fender.
Two:Changed the interior light power feed so that all he has to do is activate the switch on the light instead of having to also turn on the headlight switch to position #1.
Three: Added a fuel cut-off solenoid wire for when he upgrades to the later carb. This is fed from the regulator sense wire.
Four: Moved the reverse light wires from a column shift to a floor shift.

In addition to repairing the main harness I also built him a completely new harness for the wipers and for the bib. The only thing I have left to do is build the new rear harness and tape the main harness.

See pics...
