Just picked up a 13 4runner limited . I had an 07 FJ before with the same motor (almost) and this runner has a louder engine , it also has a magna flow exhaust , but this 4runner engine almost sounds like it has a “supercharger” some forums have said it’s a idler pulley , some have said it’s normal noise on some 4Runners/1gr-Fe motors. pulled the belt off to see if it made a difference and nothing . Any info helps .

Have you checked the intake to make sure it's a regular filter and the OEM intake parts? Aftermarket intakes can be pretty noisy.

It's not a quiet engine. But I always thought the fan was one of the noisiest parts on start up. It's pretty loud at idle compared to electric fans, but if you pulled the fan belt, then that shouldn't be spinning. The easiest way to diagnose noise is a mechanic's stethoscope. They're pretty cheap at harbor freight and make it easier to isolate and identify noises. Might just be noisy valvetrain.
