nice 63 FJ40 score....

VIN starts with a 3 (3FJ40~18104) making it 1963 production date so it could very well be a early 64 model. Tail lights are for a 64. The tub look very clean for cruiser almost fifty years old. Like as been mentioned only a few would every know if you updated the steering box to the 68 thru 72 model. Those that did know would also know the engine isn't correct even if you put in a F135, unless you could find the correct matching number block which has probably been melted down by know. I would change that steering might even thing about installing mini truck power steering and 2F. In the long run it wouldn't be worth any less and will be a nicer rig to drive.

I do find it intersting you have posts for the shifters coming out the side of the transmission and not a top plate like the one in the picture cjgoode posted. As long as I can remember that was always thought of as a mid 63 change. Come to think of it while it's a 63 production date 3FJ40~18104 seem low for 64. I know Dean and a few other have 63 production 64s. Numbers close? Angled tool box under the seat 63. Latches for windshield and lower B pillars 64.:meh:

Yes, that I can determine from what is known about frame numbers from the SOR website (Specter Off-Road Land Cruiser Parts - FJ40, 45 & 55 Frame Number Charts), and taking an average of 450 vehicles a month, my '64 was actually produced in the fall of '63...somewhere around October '63 or November '63, and it is stamped as a 1964 model.

If you take this average for this new '63 in this thread, you are looking at around 8 months earlier than the first '64 on the SOR website, so possibly a May 1963 production...more or less.

I am not good at searching this kind of info (Calling JohnnyC ;)) but I seem to remember another recent thread of a possible '63 with short B pillar posts...any one remember that thread?

Does anyone know around when the the center diff stopped on the early 40s?

I believe the center diff ran thru the 63 model year. My guess would be would be around the same time they changed the transmission transfer case but knowing Toyota it would be close but not the same time. The start of the ashtray and deforst vents were listed in service bulletins and not parts books. The micro-fiche I have just have a month and year listed and do not show any before change dates like I have seen in later parts info. Those showed monthand year start and end for parts.

You guys are awesome....all the old 40 knowledge.... I'll get the skid plate off and get some better shots of the tranny/tnsfr setup. I'm going to call the PO and try to get some history on it.....stay tuned.

I am curious about trans. I do not see the normal Toyota 3 on the tree type shifting linkage, and would also wonder if the old GM/Chevy tree shift columns would work with a Toyota trans, but then the rear centered axle would go with a Toyota trans with the shifter on the side. Very interesting vehicle for sure.

Unlike the shift rod from the later FJ40 this early one used two rods instead of just one to go from the column to the transmission. There is a pivot bracket that is bolted to the bell housing. I may have picture at home of it on one I stripped down.

Can you get pics of the whole pass side of the GM motor? Just curious.

Mark,
Glad you still have that 40. It was a pretty clean one. Enjoy it for a long time. Still got the auto/ford in it?
Pat

Hey Pat, still got the Ford/auto setup, It's been working great, and with the new wheels and tires, getting it back into ship shape. After base lining and rebuilding the transfer case/steering, I'm super happy with it. I also ended up putting in a new suspension. If you want to check it out sometime, I will drive it up and we can check out your new addition. Cheers!

DENSO Heater resto.....

Well, I've decided to try to tackle restoring this heater myself. It's in really descend shape. Came apart fairly easy after soaking it in penetrant....
The finnes are almost perfect. I've got a small sandblast cabinet I'm going to try with walnut shell media. Polish up the aluminum casting parts and probably the pewter Toyota color for the metal. I haven't tried to see if the motor works or not. Stay tuned....

Well, I've decided to part with this project and pass it on to someone who can put in the time. I've got too much going and my heart is with my 55 project. I need to focus on it. I'd like to get $2500 for it. It's at my shop in Oceanside..... I'm going to keep the Clamshell heater, but I'll let the stamped bezel go with it :((
