Hello all, Im in need of real help here and hope one of you guys can help. I have an 86 Toyota 4X4 with a 22r or 22re not sure. Its carbed. Anyways I have gone through all that I can think of and more after going through my chiltons. Here is where Im at. It turns over...SLOWLY.... got spark, getting gas. I know the truck ran a few months ago when my neighbor had it and he is no mechanic and has no idea what happened. I could really use any advice any of you have on this. This is my first Yota and wanted one for a while now. Please help?
Could be dirty contacts in the starter... If it's a 5 speed you could try roll starting it... Does it sound like it's trying to fire when it's turning over?
could be timing, follow the directions in the chiltons, and make sure it is in time, you might need to pull the valve cover to make sure the cam mark is right too.
spray some starting fluid in the carb. If it fires that way then start looking for a fuel dellivery issue. Sometimes Toyota mechanical fuel pumps will let the fuel bleed down back into the tank and have a hard time re-priming the system.
If it won't fire with the ether then you have other issues.
Slow turning, check the condition of the main power cable to the starter, and the engine ground. The truck is old enough that they could easily be getting bad. Put the battery on a charger and make sure it is fully charged. When cranking, what is the voltage across the battery terminals? Also get the voltage at the starter power terminal when cranking.
