Think I'm going to get these for the LX to replace the 21s. Need to decide on tires now.

@SQRRRL appears to be running the OEM tires that is paired with the BBS at the factory. Michelin 275/65/18 LTX AT2. Looks really good. That tire was made specifically for TRD Pro in the beginning with its unique tread pattern.

Here is the tire tread up close:

whoa whoa whoa...explain yourself. powder coated? if so, any concerns about powder coating process compromising forged wheels?

They are powder coated from the factory. Edit: I wouldn't overthink it. (My previous comment seemed too rude, sorry)

They come in silver now?

Powder applied and cured as part of a heat treatment process could do very different things to wheel strength than curing powder after the fact.. my understanding was traditional powder coating forged wheels was a bad idea. Though they do have low temp curable powders these days..

I am pretty confident whoever has those silver BBS wheels had them coated or painted that color. I have never seen a part number from BBS for that shade of silver.

You are correct that the process for the BBS wheels is unique and is nothing like the local shop with a powder coat gun and oven.

I don't remember the amount of time it takes to make one BBS wheel but it was pretty crazy compared to OEM cast alloy wheels...much much longer process from start to finish.

I was planning to get BBS wheels powder coated. I reached out to BBS asking if it’s okay to powder coat and this the response I got for Kenneth Kitching from BBS

We do not advocate powder coating wheels. Typically the temps that are required to cure the powder are too high to maintain the structural composition/integrity of the initial forging process. Some shops do utilize a low temp cure process (under 300 degrees) but if they have no way of guaranteeing you that it is low temp, I would not take the chance. On a side note, we have never powder coated anything - always paint.

All BBS wheels are painted. We do not/have not powder coated anything. You can certainly paint over the existing paint with no problems or issues. Just make sure you prep the paint surface sufficiently before spraying anymore paint on them.

good info straight from the source. this is almost word-for-word what I've heard @bloc say before 😂

I stand corrected then and apologize for the confusion.

Huh? So even the HE bronze wheels are painted? I have seen threads where people have tried to match it with both paint and powder coat with varying degrees of success. I wonder if BBS can just offer the paint code they use.......

I wish I could share more but I will admit I was wrong about the powdercoat term. We don't deal with BBS USA contacts anyways, just BBS Japan directly.

They probably could, but I suspect they have a NDA with Toyota that would prevent that. Toyota is clearly trying to make these unique, aspirational, and hard to get. I doubt they'd want the color released. Of course, this is all my speculation, but isn't that what we do in the absence of real information. :-)

It’s a Toyota part manufactured by BBS, ethically I would expect nobody at BBS to release any info that’s not public.
