Picked up a couple of these kits a few weeks back at an estate sale.

. $4 each. Not too bad.

Thinking about dumping the Coleman propane stove and going back to my MSR's and this little vintage beaut.
Like to lessen my volume of stuff. Not that concerned about the weight I have now just like to have less 'stuff'.
These are called Mountain Stove Kits issued to the military.
The stove is a model 1942, built in 1944 by Aladdin. The pots are from 1951. Very cool kit and the stove fits right in the nested pots. Nice and compact.

Nice find!

I'm still using the first and only Svea 123 stove that I bought new 36 years ago, it has never failed me and has never needed repair, not even cleaning in all that time. It's the Land Cruiser of backpacking stoves. Plus, it sounds like a jet engine when it is running.

My Dragonfly(awesome stove) sounds like a jet too so I bought a Whisperlite but it has no flame control which sucks for coffee and such.
These little military stoves aren't quite as loud.
I read 'The Thousand Mile Summer' by Colin Fletcher years ago and he used a Svea. Always wanted one.
Still trying(not real hard though) to pick one up.

Last time I looked, you could pick them up pretty easily on ebay but I haven't checked for a long time. Don't remember what the prices were like.

A little more than the $4 I paid for the ones I have.
I'll just have to pony up for a nice one.

I know what you mean. Every time I used my XGK out on the trail I always got stares. I think it would scare just about any animal within a mile of me. But man it could boil water quick.

Not being a backpacker, I'm not so worried about 'just' boiling water for a one pot meal, though that would be most convenient.
It just seemed contrary to go out in the 'wild', whether on foot or the cruiser, you know nature, the trees and the quite, my gosh the quite and then fire up this jet engine.
A flame adjustable Whisperlite would be great. This little military stove isn't as noisy as the Dragonfly so I may use it more.

nice find---i love estate sales..........and the cool factor is nice on the kit.

Only lightly pump the tank and use a light touch on the valve. Then you can get it to simmer. I can get my friend's Whisperlite to simmer on a highly pressurized tank. It takes very careful valve control.

I have the original MSR stove and it also sounds like a jet engine taking off, but it also is extremely durable. Mine has to be well into the 1000s of hours of use and it's still going fine.
