New to me: 87' 4Runner 4x4 SR5 22RE-5spd

Hey fellas,

I finally made a decision on my expedition vehicle that will be taking me from the top of Alaska all the way to the southern tip of Argentina.

Found this one on craigslist listed for $3500 with a freshly rebuilt 22RE, new transmission, and new clutch. The guy who sold it to me was very honest and clear what had and had not been done and the current issues. I offered $2800, he countered at $3K and we had ourselves a deal.

I drove it home from Sacremento about 2.5 hours and it ran great, no overheating no problems whatsover.

It currently has a 3inch BL on it and an add-a-leaf and 33inch BFG Mudd Terrains. I plan to sell the tires and downgrade to something sensible, I am not wheeling this thing. The bodylift is OK, not necessary but it makes it easy to work on the truck.

Anyway, Ill post more later lets get on to the pics!

First thing I would like to tackle is the suspension, I want to make sure it will be reliable. I have heard alot about the OME as being the best of the best but it is fairly expensive for my budget.

What would you guys suggest? I have some pictures of the leaf springs if you would like to see their current condition. The shocks seem fairly stock, Toyo somethings

Nice find, I have a 87 that has OME's kit with the 2.5" lift in the rear due to my desire to add a auxiliary fuel tank. OME kit is well worth the money try buying it piece meal or just save up and get it!!!!!

That is nice looking. I have an 89 that I am looking at the OME lift for. My bro-in-law has the 2.5" on his 87 4runner and he loves it. It rides nice and looks nice.

Why would you install a lift if you are downsizing the tires? If you want to load more weight in the rear save your money and install air bags. Unless you install a locker in the front, the stock suspension is pretty bomb proof. If you are going on expedition carry a spare idler arm and steering box just in case. A set of TREs and spare CV is a good plan also.

Where are you located? I am on the look-out for a set of those wheels.

He said he took it home to Sacramento...

Are you unsatisfied with the way it rides now? There is nothing unreliable about the stock suspension...

He might be talking bout the mileage or it being slow...

I'm guessing its got stock gears and that might be why he wants to change.
I'm curious guys... WHat would be the best (if that is even possible, everyone has different opinions here) set up as far as tires go for his use? (Expedition Intercontinental)
