fluid might have got too hot and messed up the bearings. Have you tried it after it cooled down? I have ditched the stock power steering coolers on my rigs and run a large tranny cooler. Fluid stays nice and cool and adds extra fluid to the system.

Tried it this morning with it jacked up off the ground.

I dove it maybe a half mile, so I am really concerned about it getting that hot.

Great idea about the cooler, did you just get a universal cooler?

How long since you flushed the system? What ATF are you running? If you have flushed it or done other work, have you bled it to get all the air out? The systems on these rigs can be a pain to bleed and any trapped air will cause issues.

I recently replaced my pump and while it complained a lot last week on the slickrock of Moab, it performed its job. Next step will be to add a cooler and possibly a larger reservoir.

Yep I just found the largest cooler they had on the shelf and put it in front of the radiator.

Thanks Bob- I know nothing about trapped air, so I will read up.

I have owned this rig for about a month, and driven it all of 10 miles. The P/s performed flawlessly then, and the PO said nothing about this issue and seems to be a trustworthy mudder. He did replace a seal on the pump, so there could be some air issues.

So, I have not replaced the fluid yet....

Check the 80 FAQ section. The procedure posted by Raventai is what I use. If the PO had the pump out it's possible it still has some air trapped in the system, which can cause the noise.

Ok, so it is on jack stands and the locker switch is off, and the front axle if locked. So, I likely did not wire it correctly. So several questions here. Does anyone have a 97 that can look at the color of the wires going into the connector at the locker? The 96 and 94 that we looked at have different colored wires.

If I remove the locker motor, how can I manually unlock it?

The light did not go on that it was locked up, so should I be concerned that this is not a locker issue? Would some sand getting into the differential lock it such that both wheels spin at same time? Again, don't think that sand got in there, but.....

I will post up the wire combinations that we wired together in a little while.

the locker mechanism collar might not have gotten on correctly thus reading unlocked. it has a worm gear that spins a shaft moving the collar back and forth in the diff.. so if the collar is on the wrong side of the mechanism and is locked it won't move to unlocked and will read locked. remove the mechanism, see if you can find the little collar, move it to unlocked, re-install the mechanism in the unlocked position unplug the mechanism till you get it working correctly, test drive.

Colin- our wiring was fine, or should I say your wiring was fine!! I think it was an alighment issue. It still will not engage, so I am off still, but it is unlocked now.

Cheers!

Well, I don't know about that, but I pulled it off again, realigned it using my 94 Service manual which is different from the later FSM, and it worked great. So, it is on the streets now!

Thanks to all for advice!

it's working now and not cooking fluid? THis is the transmission cooler i run in everything for a power steering cooler. out of a ford tempo/taurus. find one with a missing front bumper and it's simple to pull.

nice garden hose and hose straps :p

yep.. Boat parts from a boat salvage yard in miami. used as a heat exchanger on a boat and does the same thing on a truck.. i'll probably pull all that stuff out and redo it later. or get it out of the way for now. pump is a shurflo from a boat as well that has it's own pressure switch.

Yeah, Erik all is well with the power steering now that the front is unlocked. I will add the cooler too. This week I need to focus on the 40 though. It is really close to rolling under it's own power -- and the goal was to pick the kids up at school for the last day.... that is a week from Thursday, so not much time left -- (and the weekend is booked).

Makes sense and its out of the way. I had thought about doing that on the 60 but since everywhere we camp there HAS to be a bath house for her I didn't waste the money.

sorry for the hijack.. it wasn't that much considering i was at a boat salvage yard.. :)
can't really find those in the midwest tho..
