Hey Crusher

*What model years were the HZJ77 & 78's?

I'm checking into this today, pretty interesting...

*I wonder how much i could find a complete truck for... Any comments here?

*and what the import process will be like... It's looking like a bit of an effort huh? I know I can research this, and there's some helpful threads within Mud on it, so I'll do the digging on this one.

I'd really like to have this on the road by mid-spring, and I travel for my work in winter pretty much 3 weeks out of every 4, so I'm starting to lean towards a more readily available swap for now, and then getting on to the process of a CAN diesel for it's long-term lifespan. Hmmm? Maybe counter-productive, but I'm just not going to have real quality wrench time til near summer.

Tucker,

you say that the 79's come up fairly often...if I know where to look??

let's hear it! :D

I found nothing in the BC area Clist today, 75, 77, 78 or 79!

K5 info

found this today, which is a good research crossroads right now:

Chevrolet K5 Blazer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

*sounds like the K5 did come in a civilian 6.2 detroit diesel after all... this option really isn't as appealing as it is to me right now if the body mounts and such arent bolt-up, as I've been told... if I'm going to be doing ANY frame cuts, body/motor mount fab, and/or major component swapping/upgrading, then it seems like the Toyaota 81 series or 77 series is what I'm gonna be interested in seeing what i can find, where, and for how much

Anything with HZJ/HDJ will be 1990 onwards as that was when the 1HZ/1HD T was introduced, although the 7* series dates back to 84 with the the 2H ,3B and 3F engines. The 1HZs are still in production but not the turbo versions.
1PZ date from about 92-96?

This is still the best 7* series site for info

I think its a little club, you have to hang around the door for a while and eventually you 'll get an invite, maybe;)

came across this in the search for CAN or otherwise toy diesels... pretty sweet!

Expedition Portal: Vehicle-Dependent Overland Expedition Community

Didn't find any 70 series to even start a basis of comparison for model years and prices though

yeah, if interested you should check out the Expedition sub forum here on mud. Overland is great as a mag and a site, I'm a subscriber. Lot's of folks who are on the sub forum here subscribe as well. The difference is that the mag is not vehicle specific whereas here is is all Toyota expedition style vehicles and gear.

i finally secumed to the Overland Mag, i was told to buy all the old issues and subscribe so i did... best $300 i could spend.

Overland & such

verrry interesting...
If i get to dig deeper into building toys in the next few years, it's been my goal to import a clean early '84 Defender 110 from Britain and try to figure out a way to have a built Delica from CAN here.. probably fat chance on the Mitsubishi hmm? But still, cool to see the expedition interest here!
I gotta say that I've never really investigated the 70 series much until now, and there are some amazing FZJ77's out there.... RRRRGG, why are we so limited in the states??

they made a 25 year old delica, i do importing into Canada and there are ways to import to the US. the delica is a slid rig but a complete PITA to work on. me, i like the Pajero and Strada. Rovers look great but their drivetrains don't do anything for me.

hey Lifers

as i get deeper into particular drivetrain questions, parting the remaining 55 stuff that i don't keep, finding 55 stuff that I need, and whatever else will be coming along... should i continue to post in here, or post separate threads more specific to the individual needs?
thanks!

i usually post diesel builds here since they get lost quickly in the other sections.
if you do decide to post a new thread elsewhere stick a link to it in this thread so we all can follow along.
cheers

. Rovers look great but their drivetrains don't do anything for me.

I was talking to used car salesman at my local Toyota dealer. He had been a panel beater/spraypainter until he hurt his back.
He 1st started at the local Landrover dealer but after 18 months he could no longer bear the faces of customers coming back with Defenders he had sold them that needed front end rebuilds sometimes after 30000klms.
If it wasnt the front ends it was the drivetrain,or an electrical problem ,or a leak when it rained,or,or,or,or....

Back from Colorado

So, I just got back from working in CO for 2 weeks. Gonna go down tomorrow to bring back all the interior and get that started while I'm still debating the drivetrain options.

*Wondering about carpet kits for passenger area...

*Planning to have rear carpet custom made...

*The dash needs to be completely replaced... wondering about instrument clusters and all that... Does anybody offer complete dashes for Pigs?

* I need a front seat, gonna look around the web and here on Mud tonight for a replacement.

**Starting to consider just looking for a cheap, rotted donor vehicle for interior parts...Any suggestions?

Also, gonna bring back all the various original drivetrain parts and get to cleaning them up. I am guessing I might as well post them to the 55 section ah? Maybe just post what all I've got, and see if anyone needs anything?

ummm Lowenbrau has a HDT auto for sale that would work REAL nice in that rig.

So, I was only back home through Christmas & New years... back on the road now til mid February.
I did get all the remaining mechanical guts pulled, and the interior restoration started.

I have decided to pursue a fun temporary solution when I get back in February, until I can spend real time on this in the spring, including a potential trip to Canada to bring back something exotic and really do this project right. I'll be repeating some serious steps here, but it seems to me a way to get the truck on the road asap, and continue hunting for the dream TD donor.

So, for now, I am looking for a second pig!
*I need a running 55 w/ decent interior. For price and the function here, I'm keeping an eye out for a rotted one, with hopefully minimized corrosion to all driveline components. I will swap the parts into my clean body, and use the interior as well... I pretty much need everything but the rear bench and headliner! For this reason alone, it just seems to me to make sense.
