Also, I did get a vacuum gauge but the hose it came with (1/4”) was too big or too small to fit the ports on the carb. I didn’t think to stop and get different size hose. I sprayed some carb cleaner around the carb, tightened the vacuum pod thing on the carburetor and some of the top screws based on feedback from the tach where I was spraying. It seemed to help some.
I just realized driving it right now that I had left the choke a tad bit out last time 🤦🏼‍♂️ now when I push it in, it runs fine but won’t idle again. Guess I’ll pull it out a little for the drive home. 🤬

Figured I’d drag the hardtop out and work on it over the winter. The cap doesn’t have the right apron for my windshield but I’ll just cut it to fit, not worth changing at this point.
I have a window for it.
The doors and hatch are a whole other project.

@6f40j9 it sure looks like you’ve got this well under control. 👏

Of course I was much younger but at 22, I could remove the top alone. Lifted it like a piggy back ride and walked it off the back onto a picnic table

Be careful you don’t get off balance and drop something that is hard to replace. I like the job you do with this 40…same as my first in ‘74. They called it horizontal blue…odd

At 22 I used to do that with my 85 4Runner top. 😉
This one has never been fully assembled, so it’s much easier for me to take it off (and store it) in pieces.

Now I remember why I quit fussing with the top a couple years ago. I had ratchet straps, clamps, Chanel locks, and still couldn’t get it to bolt up. The right side of the top (if the left side is bolted down) is too narrow to bolt to the side panel. I think it’s bent from sitting on its edge for so long. I bet if I had one of those cargo bars for pickup beds I could spread it out enough.
I also really had to work to get the door bars to bolt up to the B pillars.
I drilled out the front apron to fit my windshield frame, but it looks like it sits too far forward. The windshield is against the door bars so there’s no way for it to go forward any more.
I’ve got it together (barely) for now but I definitely wouldn’t drive it around like this.

Had to take the wipers off in little bits and scoot the motor back as I went because the top is so janky.
Took it all apart, cleaned it out, wire brushed what I could and reassembled it.
Got part way through and remembered the bb on the end of the splined shaft.
Luckily I didn’t have to pull much back off again.
Found some valvoline multipurpose grease and probably used too much, but whatevah.
I still have to test my wiring because I had replaced the plug early on and might have gotten some of the locations wrong.

That is some nasty looking grease there!

After I cleaned up the wiper motor, still nothing worked.
So I verified I had power and ground up there and at the switch.
Then I pulled the switch apart and cleaned it up as best I could.
That dang bb won’t go back into the right spot but whatever.
Put it all back together and I get one speed and park, which is good enough for me.

I can literally count on one hand the number of intact early washer bottles I’ve seen. The cap that the motor sits in is extremely fragile.

Since you’re planning to install it, do some research on whether there is anything you can put on it to try and preserve it. Personally I’d put in a newer bottle and save that for a collector.

The cap is missing from my bottle. I doubt the motor still works. My plan is to wedge a gallon antifreeze jug in up by the radiator driver's side (passenger side has the gallon over flow jug wedged in place). I have a small 12VDC parastalic pump to wire in. Came from Amoron $10 19-100 ml/min. I like the idea of pouring in the whole gallon of winter orange RainX fluid at once.
