I ordered a complete OEM reseal kit from Toyota for my 1982 2F motor and received this for the rear main seal. The original is the one installed in the block, I am holding the new one. The ID and OD are visually the same, but the new seal appears to only have one inner sealing lip and a flimsy felt like outer piece. The number on the old seal is NOK AE4054P and the new one is NOK AE4054Q. I am guessing this is a new version of the old seal but I thought I would ask the group because I REALLY don't want to redo this job.

Does anyone know what the story is here? Should I install it or try to figure something else out? Thank you!

I'd be inspecting the sealing surface on the crank. I have 2 groves cut in mine and a new seal didn't work I bought a speedy sleave and a new oem seal to put in and see if that solves the problem.

What did the vendor that sold you the parts say?
You got the 85-87 version seal. Not sure what the actual difference is but have never tried to interchange them myself.

The dealer didn't know because it was an entire kit with no individual part numbers. Based on what you are saying, I am guessing they substituted a later model kit. So far, all of the other gaskets are an identical match. I will take it apart tomorrow and measure everything, if it looks good I guess I will run it. If the seal lip runs in a slightly different spot on the crank then that might actually be a good thing.

In my opinion, and unfortunately, whoever is manufacturing their parts, is not up to "traditional" Toyota standards, that we in the Land Cruiser community have relied on. I've seen this in parts I've purchased for my FJ40's and my 2007 200 series. I've come to conclude that If it doesn't have a "Made in Japan" sticker on it, it's subject to be an inferior part .. just my opinion ..

What's the kit part number they ordered

I thought I was the only one about if the parts do not have "made in Japan", the part is not good enough for the Land Cruiser. I sometimes get a wierd look when ask if it is made in Japan. Or if is made in Tiawan or China I will keep looking. And the older the 40 gets, the harder it is to find good parts.

I ordered 04111-61040 for my 1982 2F, but they substituted 04111-61044 and said that it was the new substituted part number for the entire kit, both being OEM Toyota parts. These are good quality parts, just different. NOK is made in Japan. NOK is the same manufacturer that made the seal in 1982 and it is the same manufacturer of the new seal. I am certain @cruisermatt is correct about the part year based on his comments / pictures. I think they are now shipping the later model seal with the kits. I plan to run it and if I have any problems I will provide an update to this thread.
