New Mod - Locking centre diff using transfer shift lever (no electronics!)

So you're just thinking about replacing that single part? Did you split your case yet to have a look? I'm also considering switching to mechanical shift.
I haven't got to it yet, I ordered the lever and there are some springs in there that the catalog says are different from electric to mechanical shift. All but one were still available so I got them. I also need to do a towing test to make sure I still want to install the overdrive gears.

Please update the thread when you get around to seeing if they fit, otherwise I'm considering trying to make a mechanical lever that still moves the gear from the actuator. But using replaceable actual toyota parts would be ideal.

will do, I'm surprised there isn't more interest in this.

Just thought I'd bump this for an update. I've got my case pulled for a regear, rebuild, and part time swap. I'd love to have a mechanical CDL actuator.

Also interested but also iv got a mate that has my old cdl were currently looking at making into a cable shift via the electronic housing

I just need to know where to send my damn money..... :hillbilly:

Same, and this is coming from a 100 guy! Will need to source a LHD drive center console that'll work with this though.

thankfully we're based out of U.S. so we're set !

I got tired of waiting, so I've converted my centre diff lock to be actuated manually. My plan is to have a lever for high and low range and another for the centre diff lock. It only needs to rotate about 90 deg to lock and unlock the diff.

Ill post more pictures once its back in the truck and I've worked out the shifters.

Cheers

There's a guy on one of the 80 series facebook groups working on a lever driven gear that sits in a custom welded cover that just bolts to the original place the CDL actuator bolts to. Uses the same gear that the electric actuator uses. I've seen the prototype he's made, just waiting to see how he sets up the linkage and lever to actuate it.

I've been looking for something like this for forever, but finally found another guy from another 80 series fb group who built a stand alone wire harness just for the actuator. Spoke with him and he sent me the wiring schematics for it and type of relay, so I wired it up and it works spectacularly. No need for a 7 pin mod either. Just a simple switch in the cabin, relay mounted under the truck, and new connectors on the actuator and I can lock and unlock the CDL at any time now.

Doesn't seem like it's something they are trying to make money on, and he freely sent me the schematics, so if anyones interested I'll post it here.

EDIT: well s***, should have scrolled to the end. Guy above me is the one I'm talking about.

Once you figure it all out, I'd love to buy the second one you make.

@Alexh85 What's the feel of the throw on that setup?

Seems like that reduction gear in the CDL housing area will force you to slowly move that lever, instead of the natural/faster movement of the other shifter that directly moves the clutch sleeve...

If i'm not mistaken, this IS the 7 pin CDL mod. I can lock/unlock the CDL any time with the switch, high or low range. What am I missing?:meh:

yeah i guess you could think of it that way. It's a completely stand alone harness though. I've been hunting a wiring problem with the transmission harness (i think) for like 2 years now that was causing my CDL to short out and burn up windings in the CDL motor, intermittent operation of the CDL, and general ***ery down there. So this solution solves all my problems, was very cheap, and didn't require my pulling of the trans harness to hunt it down any further.

I'd much rather have a manual solution though.

I've never been on facebook so someone must have borrowed my photos haha

There's almost no resistance at all, which is why I'm planning making a lever with detent positions to stop it slipping out of the locked position.

I suspect the reduction is just so the tiny little electric motor never has trouble doing its job.

Cheers

Ahh. Yes that makes sense. I'll take the next one!

I'm guessing you'll find a landing spot somewhere on the tcase or trans for a pivot mount?

Yeah I've got a pretty good idea in my head of how I'm gunna make it work, has to be a bit different from the low range lever. Might keep that quiet for the minute, considering it sounds like there is someone posing as me on facebook haha. Ill post photos of what I end up doing.

Cheers
