I drove it around for a while. I really want one now... BIG TIME I thought it was a good ride, and I liked it. No sweaks or rattles. Temp was around 190* the whole time until we let it idle a bit, and then it climbed to 200* and leveled off. Tranny was smooth and shifted nicely, T-case appears to be in sound working order.

Didn't pull during braking or driving.

It has Power steering. Saginaw set-up with no cracking in the horn region.

The whole damn thing is covered in Rhino lining. I'm not sure that I like that aesthetically, but I have always preferred function over form.

Engine is sitting on AA mounts, and is set up with a clutch fan.

Detroit locker kicks in as advertised.

5 point harness.

Nice stereo with 6 disc changer. It is set up for a liliput 7 inch screen and car CPU for navigation Etc.

Cool kill switch.

No catalytic converter or smog pump.

No tail gate.

No Idea on what type of tranny it has, owner has no clue either.

Rhino lined around windshield gasket?? It look's retarded

If you look at the FJ rear pic you can see some rust poking its nasty little head out where the tail gate *should be*. Didn't like that. - $200

No 4 core radiator. -$300

Speedo: no worky -$50

No top: -$400

What do you all think. I REALLY like! however, I'm a noob to these and its the first one I have looked at. I think I will offer the guy $3000 in a few hours...

That's a lot of diamond plate. I would guess from the rust on the tailgate that there might be extensive rust issues under the plate.

The paint looked a little bumby and I don't like that wood dash thing. If you or a friend know how to weld, you can always cut out and replace the qtrs if there is too much rust. $3000 wouldn't be a bad price, but once you buy it you will have to live with it for a long time. If there is anything that bothers you about it that can't be easily changed/fixed, pass! Otherwise, have fun. You will need a soft top and soft doors. I recommend spending the extra $$ on 2 pice doors. It's a lot easier to find room in the back for the top half instead of the whole door if the weather changes.

Good luck!

The paint is bumpy because its not paint, Its rhino-lined.

After showing my friend these pics he echo'ed what teapot said...

I see a big time problem with rust under the rhino and /or diamond plate, as Robert mentioned. You can't just cut out a piece and weld it. You would have to remove the rhino liner stuff, weld piece on, and re-rhino to match. Sounds like a big chore to me, and I'm not afraid to work. If you look at the other pics on my site you'll see I'm decent with a welder and a JD2 bender.

I'm going to let it sink in a little bit more...

I'd run away, looks like a high school art project. I must say the square tube roll cage is "unique". Can't say Ive seen that before.

Looking forward to seeing the pics of the '68. Glad to see you are willing to shop around.

The '68 was horrible and the guy is asking $3500??? No emission equipment, tires, windshield, lights, need replaceing. T-case was leaking. 2F had a nice coat of oil all over it... But the body was very strait w/no rust. I didn't even bother taking pics. Project truck for sure, I need one at least 3/4ths street legal before I will even consider making an offer. IMO, I would offer a grand for it at the most, and I'm afraid that would have insulted him. Better to just walk away.

I did realize something today. I really like FJ40's. Solid little buggers, perfect for the AZ sunshine!

I would also pass on that one it would be more like a 1500 - 2000 rig. in Montana. the fact that he didn't even spend the time to miter the corners of the tube used for the roll cage would lead me to believe that he cut corners in other areas as well like what's under the diamond plate.

Yeah I'd pass too. When you find a better one you'll be glad you did. Only thing guys square tube rolls are very common thats all thats on heavy machinery and they are really tested makes you think. My 2 cents

Tobydog,
I'm for diversity and all, but could we keep it to English here?

Seriously, it seemed like you have something interesting to say, but I couldn't understand it....

Also, the springs are non orig; very few and thick leaves; have heard this makes them ride like a brick but no experience. Heard fewer and thinner leaves are better for flexin. I kinda like the square tube, but I'm special.

After some thought and watching guys on this board re-do some nasty looking rigs, I got to thinking... (always leads to a bad place)

Assuming he takes $3k or (hopefully) less for it. I could get that thing street legal, w/ a top for under a grand. I could then scour the earth for replacement body panels and such. And slowly make that thing respectable.

The frame had no rust. The Engine was strong, and it didn't leak a drop of fluid.

Non;

Have you been out to Marana to see Tim??? I can not remember his exact location off the top of my head.

Tim Hill....runs a slice of heaven ....landcruiser parts and assorted rigs out in Marana. i have not heard of him doing to much lately.

I will pm a number that I have of his.

If he might be able to help you out in one way or another.
