Hi all. Occasional IH8MUD lurker who finally registered. 1990 FJ62, 186k, more or less stock. Owned for 12 years.

After living for years in NYC and now Chicago, rust is on the move (exhibit A in photo) So I came here specifically to find recommendations for Cruiser-friendly body shops in Chicagoland or nearby Illinois/Indiana.

Besides replacing stereo my DIY experience is pretty much nil. Realistic to-do list starts with replacing passenger side window motor. (or maybe just the switch? it goes up/down slowly via the driver's side switch)

Anyway, happy to be here. Cheers!

There is a write up here in this forum about adding relays to all the window motors which allow them to go up and down fast. I haven't made time to tackle that but it would solve the issue you are having.

Get a transmission cooler in that beast. The transmission dies if it gets overheated.

That is a typical rust spot that has a family and friends so a bodyshop will charge a lot to do a lot of work.
Problably the wheel arches are bondo outside and inside under the carpet rusty.
Under the doors probably thin rust, (where people mount sliders?) rust near rear seatbelts mounts, and chassis-frame rear and maybe near the reardoors thin metal cracks.
So get a screw driver and start poking, buy a flxcore welder and some sheet metal and have fun.
