Been watching awhile and finally registered. New to FJ's but have a 77 FJ40 in the process of a full rebuild.
I will be looking to see what upgrades are available for the F2 engine for a little extra power but trying to stay close to original.
This is a very rusty project but I found a 78 frame in pretty good condition in PA. Tranny was half full of water, am tearing down now to see the damage.
Lots of work ahead, thank you in advance for any advise.

Welcome to FJ40 wonderland. If you've been lurking you know we all love Cruiser porn, even rusty bodies and beat up frames, so get some pics posted! :flipoff2:

Welcome! Photos would be much appreciated by all - get a SILVER Star here on MUD.

For starters, I'd suggest a carburetor rebuild and refresh of the distributor, along with a good tune-up. If original, your distributor is already a vacuum advance unit.

WELCOME TO MUD Big John !

Happy Holiday Day Tree Week Too ......... :santa::santa::santa:

@BigJohn429 says " but trying to stay close to original. "

The 2F is like a tractor engine; designed for good torque at low rpm, to be reliable, to tolerate a wide range of operating environments and gasoline quality, and to be user-serviceable in the field. Hence, high hp and an efficient-flowing head was not a priority to say the least. You could spend some major coin trying to make the 2F what it is not, or just learn to appreciate it for what it is. Having said that, the most effective and reasonable things you can do for a bit more power, in order of cost, are these:

1. Keep your 2F in good tune; valves adjusted properly, ignition and carb in good shape.
2. exhaust header.
3. when you have the head off for a valve job, shave it for a bit more compression.
4. gearing changes to make it more responsive for what you want to do with your truck.
5. Holley Sniper throttle-body fuel injection.
6. an RV cam, or other suitable aftermarket grind for the rpm band that you would like more power in.

All just in my opinion of course.

Good luck with your build in any event, and share photos here along the way.
