That's a great pic! How's the cruiser running post head-gasket?

Thanks Tor! Cruiser is running great, just got my clutch MC in from Oz so that will be going in either this weekend or next.

Yesterday (Wednesday the 8th) was my birthday, so the :princess: and I are taking the Troopie out on her maiden camping trip this weekend to celebrate.

Unfortunately, the :princess: is a bit spoiled with the RTT so she set the conditions that there will be no sleeping on the ground. That isn't usually a problem, except I wasn't quite where I needed to be with the interior build on the Troopie. Between having the engine R&R'd by Tor and school, I've spent very little time with her.

After ripping the 2nd row seats out (heavy suckers, the PO definitely had a very well made bracket installed) I stopped at a buddy's place (he's on here as tekada) and we busted out an additional storage box for the left side of the rear that compliments the one that was already installed.

This evening I ripped the taller storage box out that was installed by the PO, temporarily relocated the battery that was in it, and threw some carpet on the lid of the storage box my buddy and I made.

It's nowhere near complete, but should be good enough to accommodate us this weekend. I'll probably sleep on the platform while the :princess: and the pup sleep on a mattress on the floor area, or vice versa.

The forward box isn't fully carpeted yet, and the lid is just resting on it (can't locate the hinges I want) but it's sturdy and will do what we need it to do:

As you can see, there's a ton of work left to do on the interior. Once I get the clutch sorted and do an oil change, my thoughts on the interior are as follows:

  • Finish right side storage platform (will be the same height as existing one)
  • Carpet storage area inside walls/rear door
  • Install panels in side walls and rear door with openings for storage
  • 12V outlets in the rear off of the fuse box (fuse box already installed)
  • Build center console with cup holders. Why don't Land Cruisers have cup holders??
  • Wire USB forward from rear for mini LCD - find a handy way to install laptop in rear storage behind my seat
  • Curtains? I'm not a fan, but understand the necessity...
  • Whatever else comes up from the :princess: after we spend a few weekends in it.
Of course, the most important part will be getting out and using the truck. Nothing that needs to be done hinders my ability to drive and camp, so this will be a rolling build for sure.

Got an interior panel finished for the rear door. Still needs paint or fabric, I haven't decided yet.

After ripping the salad bowl/UFO snorkel head off the other day and finding that it was installed with a makeshift gasket, I wasn't too thrilled.

I rummaged around the spare parts bin and found the OEM head.

The look never really did it for me, and unless I'm in a high dust area, I think the factory one will work for me.

Love me some OEM snorkel

My hat's off to you. Next time you drive through Oly en route Ocean Shores I hope you call first.

Um, mike, what's the story with that camper type rig behind the cruiser?

Not sure I'm following you... in several of the pics my 80 is parked behind it. The swingout on the rear of the Troopie used to have a propane tank mounted over the spare tire, but I have since removed it.

Did a little camping and driving this weekend:

Now I see, you were referring to the first post!

Not sure, that was at a rest stop in Arizona. It was a 4WD Fuso with Alaska plates. I didn't see anyone around it, but it seemed like a fun backdrop for the Troopie.

Reason I ask is that I saw that rig at a Starbucks (not the biggest fan of their java) I think near or on way to Joshua tree. Thought it might be yours....

BTW: troopie looks cool. There is one for sale here in Cali. I'm thinking that not having rear passenger doors would limit access to stuff. the 60 has me addicted to that access. Any thoughts?

It did take a bit of getting used to not having passenger doors, but the elevated roof and fold-down seats make it just as accessible as a 4 door wagon.

With the elevated roof, it's often just as comfortable to climb up in and work around in there sitting upright.

With that said, I do miss my tailgate. The whole barn door thing is overrated IMO, and I've adjusted my equipment to make up for it. I now carry a small table and dismount my kitchen box (pelican case) as opposed to leaving everything in the back of the truck and working out of it (as in my 80 series). I think the difference is camping/working around the truck versus out of the truck.

I headed over to busmup808's place to see about swapping my rear leaf packs today to combat some cruiser lean...

Having not inspected my suspension since last weekend's driving, I was a bit surprised to find a little more than I bargained for.

Needless to say, the Troopie is on the injured reserve list until I can get some new springs in. I'm waiting for a call from Kurt at Cruiser Outfitters about picking them up will-call at ARB USA up in Renton.

I just threw a fews sets of springs away. I can't tell but those are the back yeah? I have a complete set of fronts still and I am pretty sure I have some of those broken rears you need. I wouldn't buy new springs unless they are lift springs. Let me know if you wanna run over here and slip some of mine in place of those broken ones, easy fix. Even if 60s and 70s are different if they are the same width we can just grab some that are the closest in length, its your main leaf that would be mostly different.

Let me know.

Damn, I wish I checked here before I called Cruiser Outfitters!

Oh well, got my new CS006R springs today from ARB USA up in Renton. They are the medium load (up to 880 lbs.) 2" lift springs, so I'm not sure if we would have been able to replicate that or not.

They are beefy, with each weighing 114 lbs... big shout out to Kurt at Cruiser Outfitters for awesome pricing and hooking me up with immediate will call up here. This saved me a ton!

I'm looking to install these on Thursday afternoon.

If these overpower my front springs too much I might hit you up to see what we can do for those, as new front springs aren't really in the budget at this point.

When's the next Tacoma meet up? It's getting to be BBQ weather, and I've seen way too many built 80's running around here lately to believe there aren't more than 4 of us in the area.

Lots of updates.

  • New rear springs installed - sweet.
  • 6 weeks later (waiting for them to come from Oz) my fronts are installed - bitchin
  • Still on standby until mid July waiting for my 2.5" BS wheels.
  • Winch is in the works... gonna tuck a 9k inside the bumper for those "times".

Lots of talk about this summer, let's do this thing.

New wheels are on with spacers. I love the tall skinny look, and my track width is bitchin' now.

Time to get em dirty, but here are some street shots:
