Mmm I was driving a turbo diesel in europe so I was ok with it. And yeah, aircon is going in ... a Jayair system fitted professionally locally here. Costing me $1550 (best quote I could get).. it's not genuine but it'll do!

Not fussed about fuel economy, have a fuel card so it's not a big issue to me, but when I head off on a long trip i'll be really happy for the cage/canopy. Esp as I plan to sleep back there as it'll probably be just me or me & missus. There's a -s***load- of room in that tray, I could sleep probably 5-6 people in it.
 
um, where do i order that tray?
i am still undecided on whether i am going factory box, cool but not really practicle or a tray... got a price, company, web site?

There must be dozens off places that make them,either off the shelf or to customers specs.
As always freight would be a killer.
Cant we give you some measurments and close up pics and get someone to weld it up.
On my tray many of the hinges and bolt locks are off the shelf parts for trailers.
Those little tool boxes under the tray (entarans) are also bought off the shelf

Another sample of what they turn out here.
The 1st one would be better without those lights ,but I like the idea of the spare tyre compartments.
The outback cop unit has a closet for spare uniforms and space for a 40 litre car fridge.
These are refurbished and refitted to new cruisers. Its made by the same guy that made all those dual cab 45 you see in aussie pics

My tray was manufactured by Uniweld which is a local company here that makes an absolute boatload of ute trays for Australia (they employ over 150 fulltime welders alone). I could get it copied, but it would have to be container freighted to y ou, plus there's a couple of mods i'd have made to it but I can do that for you too. It wouldn't be cheap though, new from uniweld you'd probably be looking at around 2-3k AUD which is about the same CDN. PM me if you want me to have it priced for you and you have a friend with a container at a port in australia.
 
Awesome ute mines a 92 model and also didnt come with aircon keep us up do date with the mods iam very interested in the thread..

Blerg. So.

It's still at the mechanic. Crank had heatcracks in it and I had to order a new one from Toyota (1600 dollars later...), also new clutch, new radiator, new pulleys and blah blah blah.

Motor was bored 050 over so it's about a 4.4 litre now I think. Forged pistons, 1mm oversized stainless valves and the 1HD-T rods (much much thicker turbo rods)... all in prep for bolting the hairdryer on in about 6 months.

It's not due out for another 2 weeks. Mechanic's in hospital with some weird viral infection. :/ I miss my baby :(
 
Nice looking Trucks here, A tidy 75 series is always a delight though. I think decks are pretty personel, there are heaps around, and as we all have different tasks for our trucks they all end up with different decks.
 
Entaran ,I got around to putting mine on the weighbridge. It came out at 2430kg with 2 spares ,a hilift jack,1x full tank and a staffy bull terrier,so Im probably around the 2350 kg mark,less without the canvas and frame.

I'm 2960kg with just fuel 90 litres in one tank, and nothing else at all except both spares. (both 33x12.5 on 15x8 sunny's). That's without the canvas on but that weighs 5-10kg max. and the frame is welded so can't take it off.

I get it back on FRIDAY. YES THIS FRIDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's now 4.4L as it went 50 thou over and has forged pistons and 1mm oversized stainless valves in the head. Shouldn't cook those when I turbo it! Also replaced the rods with Turbo rods from a 1HD-T which were shotpeened prior to going in.

Yes, I play with turbo 4cyl jap imports when I'm bored and some of it rubbed off into my cruiser!

I think your fuel consumption will improve once that new engine is run in and tuned.
I got the 75 down to 12.8/100 without the canopy,put it back on and it hovers around 15
Big wide 12.5 tyres dont help with their rolling resistance.

Good luck with the new motor,don forget the pics. Try and get as much info on the rebuild as I sure others will want to build turbo proof 1HZs down the track.;)
 
New Motor:

JE Forged 050 oversized pistons
OEM Rings
1HD-T Rods - shotpeened, I didn't bother linishing them
NEW (BRAND NEW) Crank from Toyota
ACL Bearings throughout (unknown on sizings, imagine to suit wear patterns!)
ARP Main studs
ARP Head studs
1mm oversized stainless valves (custom from a valve joint on the east coast of Aus), head machined to suit and a 3 angle valve job carried at at the same time
slightly enlarged the oil passages into the head as they have a habit of cooking under high boost so hopefully will keep it a bit cooler
New seals/gaskets throughout. I think it's got a 1hd-t head gasket but not actually sure, might be standard 1hz, might have to clarify here.
That's pretty much the jist of it. The mechanic reckons with 050 over it's basically 4.4 litres now. We're aiming once the TD05 is strapped to it in 5-6 months at 160-190kw (At wheels) and AROUND 500Nm of torque again at the wheels. It will be dyno'ed as soon as it's built and again in 6 weeks after it's done about 3000 kms and had 3 oil changes.
Without the turbo i'll be happy to see 100kw @ wheels and 300Nm of torque. We'll see how I go. Should be pretty special in any case. It's -very- clean. I will shoot up there tomorrow with the camera!

FYI: 1hz engines weigh approx 300kg fully assembled!

So, we're hitting the dyno next weekend and the truck will have done approx 1000km since the engine's been back in by then. By god it's a different beast now.

I finally cracked it with the SEVEN HUNDRED KILOGRAM tray that is on it and have put it up for sale. Getting a local company here to custom fab me one from much thinner (3mm) steel instead of the 6mm steel that it's currently made of. Guy estimates it'll be 320kg instead of 680-700 that it is now. Fella who's making it makes ute trays for a living so he's done... a few. heh.

Picked up a factory long range tank to replace my leaky piece of crap, it's only 90 litres instead of 120 but really I don't care. It has a sender and won't leak so i'm happy :) And it bolts in factory location! So once we take the tray off we're going to drop that tank in, but put it in 2 inches lower and fab up a stainless water tank to sit over it. The new tray is going to sit two inches higher than it should on the blocks to allow articulation room for the rear suspension and room underneath for that water tank. Still have a massive amount of room on the RHS of the chassis for something else if I want too. Possibly making up a tray for the third battery and air compressor, but might put them ONTOP of the tray instead (easier to service and less likely to be damaged).

I have half a million pictures of the engine rebuild which i'll post later on. Anyone in Australia want my SUPER HEAVY DUTY tray? :D
 
So... 10 months have passed since I last made a post here. As with every cruiser, mine is not the same as it was back then! So here's a quick update...

98kw, 465Nm torque... at the wheels. In third gear. We did the dyno pulls in third because third is the gear that I use most when really pulling heavy loads (the 30-70kmh range gear!). Of course if we swap upto 4th this will become a lower number.

I ended up swapping my tray + cage for a different one which is also steel but only about 250kg instead of mine which is 680kg (weighed when we took it off). New tray goes on in the next week and a half or so (or so i'm being told).

Rear torque tube was bent, diff fxxxed, etc. Kept snapping hubs on the left and right at the rear... which was fun. So we swapped in 6 stud rear end from a 98 model HZJ75 ute and... well now I have disc brakes. Miracles happen because the toyota LSD... works BRILLIANTLY. Yes, I nearly passed out from shock too. I pick the ute up from this tomorrow!

Put in a full set of Ironman suspension with no real lift due to already having massively heavy duty springs under the car. The springs are actually OEM, but they are the heaviest duty possible from OEM. Found a few cracks in the towing assembly that i'll have to have welded, it apparently doesn't like towing car trailers with ruined rear shocks (too much downweight on the towball and has caused cracking).

We're taking the seats out of it next week and putting in something else. I've no idea what yet (probably from a supra or a vr4, but we'll see). Short story is my factory drivers seat has snapped in 4 places in t he back and is worn thru on the fabric, and the bench seat is like sitting on a slab of concrete. Going to 2 seats and putting the centre console I had made 18 months ago in... finally. *grin*

Had the windows fixed. The bailey chains were screwed. Now they go up and down properly.

370,000kms and counting.

And I'm sorry about the photos on the first page, i'll get some more hosting space and put them up again. I'm going to invest in a set of Lightforce lights soon I think.... or maybe a new bullbar. I'm not sure which.
 
Good update. I too have changed trays. I picked up a Unicorn tray,same as the dealer supplied type. The weight savings have dropped the fuel consumption by about %7 in the 3 weeks since I had the tray fitted.
Goes uphill much easier:D
