I just picked up this 77 FJ45 longbox. I am going to do a complete restoration. I have always wanted one of these since I was a kid and I finally got one. HELPPPPPP! Any advice on where to start. I am going to take the box and cab off over the next few weeks. The frame is not in the best shape. I will start by figuring out if that is repairable. Any advice ????????

Take it slow and do your research asking questions and making sure you have plenty of options. Good luck on your new journey you have a bunch of fun ahead of you.

Thanks for the comments and I will take it slow. I have my work cut out for me as I have to change some of the mods done already to get it closer to original.

By original yoe I meant stock. I first have by reversing the spring over conversion that was done. I am doing a complete frame off restoration. Looks like I need a new tub and box. I am trying to decide between Aqualu. Aluminum parts or steel parts. Thoughts?

That is the biggest decision one has to make. I suppose if rust was too much, I also would embrace aluminum. It hurts the purist in me but, on the other hand it can still be a work of art, and never rust again.

Welcome. It looks like you are from Manitoba. You might want to check out RocDoc on the forum. He is also fro Manitoba and says there are not too many cruierheads out there.

Judging from the one picture posted, it doesn't look like you need a new box. That side looks like it is in really good condition. Better than mine. (So if you do get a new box let me know...;))

Nice score Bruce! It is a very good looking rig. Will you be reversing the FJ60 steering as well? I have started rebuilding my 78' FJ45 and it is a blast!! I can't wait to have it finished and start using everyday. Good luck.

Nice find!!! Where did you find that? Im in Sask so nice to see another 45 kinda close. Your truck looks in pretty good shape compaired to mine! Haha look forward to the build. Post up some pics of your frame issues

I posted the best photo. I live in Winnipeg, Man and I found the truck on Kijiji. The guy placed the ad I replied and after 4 days and no reply I assumed he sold it. I called the local grocery store in the town he lived in and asked if they knew anyone with a blue landcruiser. The guy that answered said oh ya that is Bob (name changed) do you want his #. True story!

Hey I am from Winnipeg. I posted more photos. And a long reply that answered some questions. Thanks for the reply.

I guess I better learn how to post photos. I reread all the questions and I will be reversing the steering. Here are some more frame photos

Hey Bruce the struggle with picture attachments is part of the initiation on MUD!! You can go back and edit some of those pictures out if you want to. That frame is pretty ruff. I don't know if there is enough there to save or not. The easy thing to do (HA HA HA) is find another one. I look forward to seeing your progress.

Yah your frame looks as bad as mine!!!

A few provinces away but nice to see another northern build. I am new to this too. I got mine last November, it's a 1977 as well. Like you I have wanted one since I was a kid, 16 years old, and this truck would have been new when I was that age. My first vehicle was a 1967 45LV but the pick up is what I really wanted ( but now I wish I had kept the LV though). Mine is rusted quite a bit worse than yours, the frame is beyond repair but it came with another frame that was frankenstiened a little so I was lucky enough to get another frame that is pretty good. It also came with another windshield frame, bib, set of doors and another 2F, trans and t-case. I am going to fix the body rust and I have the tub completed so far. I plan on keeping it original as well. Slow process but can't wait to be driving it. Lots to learn but Mud is a great resource. I was suprised and glad to see that so many of the parts are available.

This thread needs more pictures!

I would start by getting some monster truck axles, the biggest tires you can find ,a Keith Black BB, Nitrous 400 shot, who doesn't like NOS? Paint a naked chick fighting a dragon on the doors, tint the windows, get a 3" dia chain steering wheel, exhaust through the bed, build a roll bar and cover it in black tape, a couple chrome diff covers, might as well chrome the driveshaft and steering box too, and mount as many KC daylighters as you can but don't wire them in........

Of course that would only happen in 1989, honestly man its your truck and you should do what you want because your the one who's going to be driving it, saying that I would drive it for a year before you tear it down for a frame off, nice truck BTW
