Ahhhh, I see. It's a frequency thing. I know nothing about HAM radios, obviously.

Clearly :)

No worries, and yes, the HAM 'stuff' is on bands that are allocated for amateur radio use and require a license. There's various grades of license depending on whether you're happy on 2m/UHF or want to get onto HF etc. It's one case where the license is basically free, you just pay for the test and $15 is so minimal that the VEC (volunteers) aren't in it for the money :)

cheers,
george.

How about programming a radio with a Mac or do I have to use a PC?

For the baofeng you want to download Chirp, runs on a PC. Not sure what a Mac is - some kind of hamburger, certainly can't be a computer, who would call a computer a burger?? :) Yeah, Chirp runs on a burger, I mean a Mac too.

Google for: Chirp Mac

cheers,
george.

Awesome. Thanks. My old pic laptop is only good for a paperweight.

Me!
I studied for the test and I have no intention on taking it. Pointless.
So is your disrespect limited to the FCC or does it include all of the licensed HAM operators around the world?

Tech: I'm curious as to how you identify yourself when transmitting?

Being licensed on 2m is down right stupid. There is no need for that. 2m should be free as the CB band is.
In an off road communication you don't need to be an AA member to stand up and identify yourself as being drunk radio operator.
These are old habits perpetuated by old farts since the time before the internet when they had the need to communicate with other people around the world.

WOW.

Um - that opinion is just plain **STUPID**. There's already a band assigned for FRS where you can 'play' for free. There's also CB. What don't you go and play in the CB/FRS bands and leave 2m for us licensed Hams to use?

Those 'old farts' are fighting to keep the amateur bands assigned for amateur use (vs disappearing for commercial use), those same 'old farts' are the ones installing/maintaining the repeater system that I'm sure you would be happy to use. They are also the ones that likely will pick up your call for help and route that help to you while you are offroad. That 2m band is also used in times of local/state/nationwide emergency, there's protocols to be followed for that use.

No point going further since you obviously have a very limited/interesting idea how the world should work. At this point I'd categorize you as 'doesn't play well with others'...

cheers,
george.

Hi, my name is crap in the pants and I am located in my basement.
How strong is the smell of my pants in your area?

Look at this senior citizen almost 8 years ago.

Hi All,
I am one of those OLD FARTS. I do remember a network before Yahoo and Google. I have had an email address since 1985. I also support local repeater groups that can help a stranded motorists can get help. George is right and we have had unlicensed intruders try to use ham radio. These rules are not set by someone locally but by the FCC. CB was once an orderly radio service. FRS was proposed to let unlicensed users get on the air. Since 'Crap in the Pants' is against being licensed, his only option is CB and FRS.
The guy in the video is hardly a Senior Citizen, not enough grey hair.

Drago, I'd like to use this thread as a resource in the future so I know where a lot of important info will be to help me get started. I plan on getting a lisence just because I will be using it along with the coastguard, marine rescue, and fishing boats around the island I live on in the summer. I will also be using it on my boat for communicating to other boats and for emergencies for myself and others and it might be important to know how to talk to those organizing rescue. It's small enough of a place that it won't be too hard to identify me. My son is the only youngster that has his name so knowing I'm unlicensed will be super easy and I've found its better to keep the year-rounders happy with me and keep tension and conflict to a minimum. I'd appreciate it if this would remain cordial since my 12 year old son will be reading these posts and I don't want him to blow off the studying because he doesn't see it as necessary. Thanks, Dan

Radios will be here today. Downloaded CHIRP for Mac...I'm sure I will have questions tonight setting them up.
