Howdy,

I posted a thread in the FJ60 Tech forum, but here's the gist of it:

I live in Lenexa, and my transmission went out on K-10. Not sure if it's a clutch or internal problem at this point. Got a tow back to the apartment, and am looking for a recommendation for a repair/transmission shop.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hate to assume, but you must have the automatic in it?

Bad news..... I have never heard of a good rebuilder of one -- anywhere in the US. That may be overstating, but that is what I have heard.....

I am not the expert, but the solution is typically to find a used one, or swap to a manual.

Then you should be in luck!!!!

What year 60?

1986

Just called Olathe Transmission, and they quoted $500 in labor if it only needs a clutch replacment, couldn't really give any other numbers for repair, since they don't know whats wrong, obviously.

He also estimated the tow at ~60-70, based on distance, about 8 miles.

So, describe the problem? Did you smell a rotten egg smell? Did you hear gears grinding, or have a bunch of fluid on the ground? Did you suddenly loose power or gradually, as if it was slipping. EDIT ---- sorry, just read your other post.

With your description of events, sounds like you should just swap in a used tranny.

Are you able to work on it? Do you have space, tools equipment? Ability/drive/desire?

If you want to test your thought on just being a clutch, I would drop the screws holding the cover over the clutch and take a look what you find. There should be 4 or 6 bolts to take out. No fluid or anything there, just a cover. Then see what the clutch looks like.

My 2 cents is even if the clutch is gone, (given your sycro problem), switch out the tranny too.

I have the ability and desire (definitely $500 worth), but mostly lack space. I would have no problem buying a jack and stands, but my landlord frowns upon mechanical work, to the tune of adding various fines to my rent and ultimately towing the vehicle.

I'll check the clutch out first and go from there.

Thanks

If you can't see the clutch or tell if it is ok, then start the engine, drop it into gear, drop the clutch, and (assuming it is not moving. Look up into the area I described where you pulled the cover off, and see if the input shaft is spinning. If so, then your tranny blew out. If it is spinning, then the power is getting to the tranny, and the tranny is busted up.

If this is the case, Call the tranny shop and see what it would cost for a replacement tranny. I am goign to guess 1,500.

I pm'd a guy to see if he has a tranny for you. May be $300 -$500 bucks, but you need a place to do it.

There are a few guys that work for $$, affordable and cruiserheads. I will try and contact for you.

upI guess I need my eyes checked, didn't even see the cover when I looked last night; just thought it was set up like a mini-truck with a one-piece bellhousing.

Anyway, when I pulled the cover I found a large clump of fibers gathered up towards the tranny, and can see some still flat chunks of the clutch disc stuck around the pressure plate and fork. So the clutch is out for sure.

I really appreciate the help here.

ETA: Found a guy on CL parting out a 1979 TLC, and appears to have 2 tranny's - one with a t-case and one w/o. Will that fit?

I think they do, but you need to ask someone that knows more than me about 60's. Post it up on the 60 section.

you need a 19 spline 4spd. I don't think i have one but know where some are if you need. I"d start with clutch sounds like it's dorked. I can loan rob my transmission jack or he has an engine hoist as well at his place. I have a clutch kit at the house you can use but have to replace if your strapped on time.

just back from vacation so sorry so late on responding.

so to answer your question the 79 4spd won't be a direct drop in but you can make it wokr just not advisable. I can provide a 4spd and tcase but not "exactly" like you have would be what the guy is selling. don't buy till you determine that's exactly what you need. i have like 4+ trannys sitting here at the house.

Thanks for the responses.

The clutch is bad for sure. I started doing all the little things to drop the trans, and only have a ground wire and the drive shafts left, but can't break the shaft bolts free.

It would be great to do this at somebody's house, to save money and meet some folks, but I don't really have a way to get the truck there besides having my roomie flat-tow it with his '86 mini-truck. Don't think that's a good idea at the moment.

Are you saying the input shaft has 19 splines, or the output? All of the clutch discs I've seen for 1986 are listed as 10 spline units.

Thanks again

the output for the transmission has 19 vs the 16 or 10 for earlier stuff.. if your just doing a clutch you won't ever see the splines on the output of the transmission.

To remove the driveshaft bolts grab 2 open end wrenches and squeeze them together to break the nut loose. OR use a second open end as a cheater bar.
