Same here, in case I'm more local. Feel free to PM me too

Slightly off topic but would any aftermarket sub fit in the stock location? What size if so? I am looking to upgrade all speakers and factory sub and install a Pioneer 8000NEX for the brains haha. All in due time, Thought i would ask in advance tho :) Thanks in advance!

Yes, people have done it. Just do a quick search and you're bound to find the thread I'm thinking of. IIRC an 8" sub is as big as you'll fit in the stock location, but you could probably squeeze a 10" with slight modification.

I'd be interested in a stock subwoofer enclosure, 100 series LC, preferably 2000 model if anyone has one.

My plan is to replace the two stock subs with two JL audios which are 6.5 inch, slightly larger..

Which JL Audio subs are you looking at @El Cid?

I've replaced everything else w/ Focal but the sub and have been stuck trying to choose between placing a box in the back, building an enclosure for a larger size sub in the existing side panel, or putting a similar size sub in the OEM enclosure.

Not sure how it will sound, but definitely need to fix this.

I'm saving my do re mi to put Focal Aria's floor standing speakers in the house, their product is solid. But for the LC, I'm going with two of these.
Mind you, I'm in a 2000 model, I believe they go to a single sub after that year.

Bear with me and if I figure this out, I might be able to duplicate my results easily and send you a copy of the mechanism I build.
Time is the issue here, but my plan is to get my factory enclosure out and have a look. If I can modify it, it will be simple. If I have to build a new enclosure, then the challenge will be finding the right material to build it with.

The prices I've been quoted for car stereo work are ridiculous. Thus, the obstacle has been my commitment to making this a DIY project. I can find a technical friend to handle the wiring, I'm far less afraid of building my own enclosure..

A close up, detailed photo of the enclosure would help me greatly, my gut feel is I will have to solve a depth problem with these subs and build the box out a bit. Not difficult, but the hard part here is you take the thing apart, THEN go to work building the right enclosure from a model of the original. That makes it messy and time invasive.

If I had a model of that enclosure or something similar, I could easily build a few in a day.

Looks like I'm in the same boat. I've procrastinated getting this done for all the reasons you list above - "ridiculous prices", etc.

I've got a '99 sub enclosure sitting on the shelf in my garage, so let me know if you want me to take pics, measurements, etc.

I'm pretty sure though the '99 had a single sub in it though. I'd even pay you to build me one if it made any sense/cents! ha.

Let me see if I can get mine out and start cleaning out/up the old enclosure. if I can do that and figure out the dimensions that need to change, it should be straightforward, hope to do that in the next day or so. I'm hoping that I'll have access to a 3d printer very soon. Like tomorrow. If the capabilities are what I think they should be, then it won't be a big deal. I'm less worried about the cutting and more about the materials. I realize it won't be exposed, but that particle board stuff is for the birds. I can find a good mesh covering at lots of fabric stores, but I'd like to see what my material options are...

I just need to get that one prototype done and I think it's simple, straightforward operation. The marginal cost of two versus one should be minimal. So I could simply charge you materials Let's face it, neither of us want to do this, there is a benefit to the learning curve of two people.

If you could shoot me a photo of that enclosure, I might ask for a few measurements, particularly depth and total width. Thanks, that will be of huge benefit, I gotta think yours and mine are similar.

I think you could just go with one JL sub that fits, no?

Oops - it's got two subs. (Who knew? Who cares? When in they sounded very poor!)

Here are a few images.

L = 29.5" (32" with the tab on the right)

W = 5" at the base

D = 7" (at both "fat" ends - the sub and the little box on the left)

You sir, are a genius. That's actually good that it's got two subs. All the more easy to modify...

I take it that's plastic, no? And the original subs are 4-inch? I would have preferred to just flip out the subs with identical subs, but the closest/best replacement subs are 6.5 inch. We need to simply enlarge the opens and replace..

At a glance, it might be easier than I thought.

Smooth,

Here's the plan after I look at it a bit more: I need to come up with a 'plate' that mounts to the side of that where the current speaker holes are..that plate is essentially the fix that will keep both of us from being gouged by aftermarket dealers who want a home project. We'll use the plate to accommodate new speakers and we'll secure that to the existing enclosure. Assuming depth of the subs is no problem, that's essentially the fix.

I'm going to probably hit a few supply sources for a plastic or composite plate with two 6.5 inch holes in it. Get that done and we're good. It might be that we need to find a couple of rings that serve as mounting brackets, but that shouldn't be difficult.

I don't foresee a problem in getting enough material for both of us, but I'm on it!

Yep, seen just about all of the subwoofer threads. A little disclosure here: I'm a licensed control freak.

Here's the problem:
I don't want to pay a stereo shop to gouge me and give me some ghetto looking set up.
We need a solution that's functional, continues the stock appearance but provides room for a technology upgrade.
Our challenge is the fact we have the enclosure and wiring for two subs that are also shallow in dimension. This would be much easier if it were simply one sub. In fact, we probably wouldn't even have to discuss it.
A good(not great, just good) solution is to buy two improvement subs and modify the enclosure just enough to accommodate the new equipment, which in the case of the JL's is larger and deeper than the current sub.

To keep that simple, we'll need to build just enough onto the current enclosure to house the new subs. That will give us the benefit of keeping the wiring and existing enclosure mounts largely intact.

Matserelli sort of did this in the other thread, but he added an amp and changed the appearance a bit. I'm hoping to find a good plastic to use over a small frame and perhaps add wire grills over the new subs...

Update: www.parts-express.com sells 1/8 inch plastic sheeting... textured and manuf'd specifically for auto trim.

Will be here in a few days, but this is a big step..

This is the thread I was planning to take pointers from. Since you will have to build it out to fit any JL sub in there, I like that he built the box out to be flush with the interior and scrapped the stock grill. But I dislike the 8" sub because panels had to be trimmed and altered the look. My plan was to take out my single 5" (or whatever was stock in my 04), scrap stock speaker cover, build out the box to same depth as interior, mount a single 6w 3v3 with JL grill, plug it into stock amp wires and turn it on to see how it sounds. Add amp later if required. Good luck fitting two! I'm rooting for it to work out so that maybe I can model mine after YOUR OEM sub thread.

Yeah, your earlier post caught my attention, as we're in precisely the same boat. It was inspiring to see that he was able to use the wood successfully to mount his 8" sub. If this 1/8 inch plastic sheeting can hold screws, then I just need to build the appropriate box to pin to the existing enclosure, but I'm having to scratch my head about porting the box to allow for air flow..My objective at present is to get the sheeting and mounts in place and see where problems exist.

I can tolerate a bit of overhang, but I'm like you, I want it to be as seamless as possible..

If my measurements are correct, both of the new subs should fit within the existing shape of the enclosure, but I'll have to add some ports for air flow and build outward to handle the depth of the new subs..
