Just got this from the owner. Dammit.

"Let me apologize for any hardship this may cause you, but we have decided not to sell the FJ40. We will return your check to you if you have already sent it out. We are not selling the vehicle to any other party, but have decided that as long as we own our desert property we want to have the land cruiser.

Again I apologize for ant hardships this news may cause you."

I wonder if it had a bunch of interest that made them second guess selling it. Figure that they could hang on to it for a while longer and sell it with no problem later. Probably belongs to a snow birds who kept it at their winter home. Probably thought it was getting old and decided to sell it this spring before heading north. Where it's located makes me think retired. Not much work in that area.

Sorry to hear that they are not selling. Non-rusted original FJ40s still show up in the southwest. At the price they were asking they knew pretty close to the current value. Every once in a while you can find one in about this shape with fewer miles for a fraction of the price:grinpimp:

X2,,,,,,,,,if something is for sale, go buy in THEN...........trust me , i have learned the hard way.:frown::frown::frown::frown::frown:

sorry this happened.

I was worried about it sitting after we had done a deal; I'd have shown up with cash the same day if I could have.

Oh well. I kinda enjoy the search, so I'm okay with it. Gotta move on.

I think you should let me take that rear heater off your hands. Nice clean FJ40. Great year too. Any pics of the engine?

Edit: Sorry! Just read the rest of the thread. You will find another.

Not to easy to do sometimes. This cruiser was not anywhere near to comontgo's back yard. Which meant a road trip. Looks like that was planned for this weekend. Sounds like he was doing everything right. Senting the money ahead to make sure it was his. Then getting the first free days he had. Sometimes even when you do everything right is still doesn't work out.:crybaby:
It's to bad too by all the cruisers cbmontgo has I'm sure he would have kept it original. Not to many cruiser last this long without being modified. It's a shame when you see one this original get a engine swap, lift and cut fender wells.

Yeah, it does suck. It was going to stay original and I planned to keep it for a long time.

He had a lot of calls on it and I wonder if our deal was trumped. Supposedly a restorer in CA was hot to trot to buy it too. People are strange sometimes.

Well, as it would turn out, the owner called me back and felt bad about backing out of the deal. Long story short, I flew to Phoenix this week and picked this truck up. May 1976 production date, just broke 70,000 miles, and no rust (other than some small surface rust spots on the rear sill).

Runs and drives beautifully and has the original jack and tool bag. Also has the original TEQ windshield and headlights that came in it new. This thing is straight out of 1976!

I've never seen one this original. Paint, hub caps, engine parts, everything. Top has never even been off. Here are some pics:

Great find! Better keep Ben away from it!!! Might end up in the water!

Later,

I've got quite a few things to do before I am happy with it...replace the radio with stock, remove that gay Ramsey 6000# winch (too big for an ATV and too small for a truck), replace belts, cap, rotor, plugs, wires, etc with all new OEM stuff, and change all of the fluids. I am probably going to put in a new OEM fuel pump and redo the vacuum lines while I'm in there.

I bought this truck to keep and pass on to my kids one day, so it is a great long-term restoration candidate.

The top is going to come off too. We've got too much fun cruising to do this summer!

I was about to finish reading this and felt bad for you (and wondered where the pics were in the early part of the thread).........and then the story ends great. The rig looks great too. Congratulations.........I hate you! Just kidding you lucky dog.
