hey im new to 4wding(or driving fullstop) and was wandering what is a good 4wd for a first car that goes good 4wding and is easy(ish) on the diesel for onroad driving. so far im liking the 4 runner but am unsure of its consumption per 100km (or miles cos your american)

diesel's aren't offered in Toyota's in America so its really hard to help you with that question.

We have a handfull of people with diesels here on Mud. DanS HJ-45 has a 2LT-E and said he gets around 30-35 miles per gallon, what that means in Kilometers per Liter I have no idea.... :D Welcome to Mud! :cheers:

I say 4 door Hilux too.

what that means in Kilometers per Liter I have no idea....

Means it gets about the same mileage as a small sedan. That's what it means. :flipoff2:

Really, the Hilux trucks are wicked awesome. They are simple, reliable, and decent 4x4 trucks. My biggest beef with mine at the moment is the independent front suspension (which a 4-Runner/Surf would have), I much prefer a solid axle (which a Hilux pickup/Ute would have).

The reason I say 4 door (and I bet 2ndgen says it too) is because they were never available here. And they are ultra wicked cool. I seriously want to go overseas, find a 4 door body in a junkyard and ship it back here to the US. That's how bad I want one.

A 4-runner/Surf will not get as good of mileage as a lighter Hilux would, but it won't be THAT bad. Maybe 10-20% lower mileage than a simple Hilux.

America Got Hosed!!!!! :bang::bang::bang:

Couldn't you chaps tell that this fella is in s***ney? :popcorn:

The problem with any age Hilux is that they cost mega bucks on the used market, and most will likely have had insufficient maintenance performed, as parts are only widely available through Toyota Dealers and Toyota Dealers don't keep parts instock, so you'll have to wait for 'em to come from Japan. - My other source of parts is Don Kyatt, without Don Kyatt there wouldn't be a Four Wheel Drive parts industry, even with them I've still had to resort to importing parts. Example
Also have a read of my Rig of the Fortnight Thread.

If I were in the market for a used Four Whell drive in this economic climate, the only car I could justify pony'ing up for is a Ford Exploder.

With regard to petrol engines, the Americanos got the 22R in the second generation Hilux, where as 'ere in Australia we got the 4Y.
Regardless of the Engine, petrol or diesel, they'll all use about 15L/100km
