Need Help Identifying Year

That VIN number shows as Dec 78 in the SOR chart (I wouldn't say the chart is foolproof, but I think it's probably pretty close). What is the engine serial no. and what is the date stamp on the top front of the carb? You may very well have one of those late model 78s that has a mixture of 78 and 79 parts. I think Jim C and Mark A are probably the only guys that would know if there are any meaningful differences between a 78 and 79 carb.

Carb date ID from Jim C: The format is Y M DD. Y is the last digit of the year (4=1964,1974,1984...), M is a letter of the alphabet corresponding sequentially to the month (A=jan, B=feb,...), and DD is the numeric day of the month.

Based on the components you have it looks like a 1978 including the carb cooling fan. I'm not sure if the 1979s had this option.

FWIW, my 12/79 40 has a stock carb cooling fan.

Are smog checks mandated in Orlando? Down south here there is no such requirement.

Yeah, that's a June 79 carb. I don't see that as being original to the truck, even if it is a late 78. Perhaps @FJ40Jim can comment on the differences between the 78 and 79 carbs.

Johnny posted the Federal smog schematic. I don't know if there are any visible differences between that and a CA 78 (and I'm too lazy to compare them), but here is a CA 78 schematic.

Done. I added it to my previous post.

By the way, there is a third version of smog for a 78; the High Altitude version. You said you bought the truck from California, but that certainly doesn't mean it was shipped there originally. If you find something that doesn't agree with the FED or CA smogs, I can scan-in the High Altitude schematic.

There's no indication it was a hi-alt truck as there is no HAC valve or holder.
The carb is an early '79.
Everything else is M.Y.1978, though there are many hoses misrouted and a few pieces missing.

Interesting that they made the effort to hook up the '78 fuel line to a '79 carb that didn't provide for one (return line was at the pump. How about the EGR hookup. That would be very different between the two. '78 would have had the tube between the fuel bowl and the throttle body; '79 would have been in the intake manifold.

Not sure what you mean. My carb has a return line.

Not sure about EGR hookup. What you see in the original pic is how it came with the truck when I bought it. I don't see a fuel bowl on my truck, unless I don't don't what to look for.
