Need Advice from all Deisel Gawds! Guru's, or if you just know a bunch about Diesels.

Vehicle isnt a toyota but the engine is diesel.

4x4:
1972 Suzuki LJ20V
weighs at 1,378 pounds (625 kg),
length is 125.8 inches (3,195 mm),
359cc 2cylinder 2stroke horsepower 28 hp at 5,500 rpm 27.5ftlbs @ 5000

Transmission:
4speed

Transfer case
H) is 1.7146:1 and low (L) 3.013:1

Overall reduction ratio (H) Range 1st gear (Low) = 38.53 2nd gear = 23.20 3rd gear = 14.84 4th (Top) = 9.71 and Reverse = 3.53 now in (L) range 1st gear (Low) = 67.73, 2nd gear = 40.78 3rd gear = 26.08 4th (Top) = 17.07 and Reverse = 67.73

I wanted to pass this by you guys before I go off and buy this engine. I found a Kubota D1005 diesel engine complete turn key for about a 100 bucks. Engine runs. If this works out then I plan on pulling the engine and transmission from the LJ20 and putting this diesel in its place. What do you all think?

Kubota D1005:
1000cc, 26hp @ 3600

Well if its not going to work you could attach a generator to it and keep it on standby for when the power goes out.
Might even get your $100 back selling power to the neighbours:flipoff2:

I just installed a crawler gears into a Sami, kinda like a baby cruiser case, same high quality and easy to work on.

What are the max revs of the diesel motor? Do the revs correspond to the cruising revs of the Suzi? On the trail the diesel will be great, I'm just concerned that the cruising revs might be a bit low with the diesel.

Well... I finally compared the dimensions between the D1005 and a VW diesel. They are pretty much identical. Doesnt make sense using an engine with 28hp when I can use something with four times that amount. I just thought the Kubota engine was neat and didnt think to see how big it might be.

A LJ20v. Ha.
I used to have a LJ80.
Very fun littlle rigs.
My room mate has a stock LJ80v in the driveway (parked) and a build LJ80 with SPOA on with a mini truck drivetrain (and steering) running 33s. It also has an exo and rear locker.

Had a chance to see and drive a LJ10 around some trails at the north west (Seattle) meet from LJ10.com
Those 2 strokes are fun to hear and drive, but no power until 3500rpm and liked to be at 5000rpm+.
Felt wierd climbing a hill in 1st at 5000rpm.

But I went up every trail hill 1st try.
Lots of the build jeep guys with lockers were taking 2 and 3 trys.
In fact every suzuki made it up 1st try.
The jeep guys were amazed.

Anyways,
You might be better off trying to put a sammy drivetrain in there.
They are cheap and plentiful. Or maybe a sidekick 1.6 mounted to a sammy transmission (adapter kit available from Calmini).
I would also put sammi steering in. Stock LJ steering can get scary.

Go to LJ10.com and take a look.
There are lots of guys on there who know the LJ 10 and 20's inside and out.
The is a guy from Oklahoma city who was very knowledgeable.
He had put a 1000 liter cyc suzuki sprint engine in his.

Just wondering what you would do for a transmission in the LJ20 with the Kubota diesel.

Cheers,
Nick :)

BTW: I know there is an adapter kit to mate the VW diesel to a sammy tranny.
Not sure who makes it (Calmini maybe?).

Suzuki's rock!!!
In my opinion they are a mini land cruiser!

Im a member of LJ10.com... ;p

I can make the adapter plate and do all the other stuff to mate a VW diesel to a sami 5speed and place it in the LJ20. It would cost me a fraction of the kits out there.

I enjoy the little LJ20... you should see the people stare.... and mine is one of two known righthand drive tintop's in north america.
