Hmm, found this under the 40 this week. Any clues what it goes to? For scale it is on my dash:

How does your clutch feel? Slave return spring is my guess.

Funny; I found one of those too. Very similar looking spring. I was thinking it was part of the seat adjust mechanism. I’d better look more closely.

Could be the clutch arm spring as Middlecalf says or possibly off the part that keeps the front rubber brake line from rubbing on the tire. You would notice right away if it was a throttle return spring.

Looking at old front drum brake FJ40s not uncommon to see the springs broke and just hanging there. This one being broke make me think if it.

But how does a broken drum brake spring get out without removing the drum? They’re also a lot heavier than what’s shown in the op’s pic

Does anyone have a pic of a spring on the front brake hose? I've never seen one there on a 40.

Looks a little light for the slave return spring... my vote is carb/throttle return spring.

It gives me a great/terrible idea for an April Fools Joke... although it wouldn't be any fun if the driver didn't notice.

The nut looks like a wiper arm retainer.

I'm talking about the ones that held the front brakes up and out of the way during turning.

Canada did get the Land Cruiser as early as the US. These were only on front drum brakes. The spring was anchored to the main brace of the front fender. Should be able to snap a picture.

I looked at a 61 that the fenders were removed. Part of the clamp is still there. Looked at my 73 and it's a different style. Brake line runs along the axle not coming off the frame so has no spring. My guess is routing changed with the dual circuit brake lines. My 68, 70 and 65 FJ45 are at another location. Had the 68 the longest and one remember the spring on.

Only spring I can think of that has a long straight section between a loop and the coils is the clutch return spring (pic shown)

Seems like most other springs have loops at the coils (carb return spring pic shown, similar for brake hose hanger springs)

Drum brake springs are much heavier (pic shown)

Gas pedal spring is wonky looking, not like the op's pic.
I don't know. Maybe it's not even from a cruiser.

LITP is correct. My 68 is at another location but I have those springs on either side in the front to hold the brake line hose up and away from any interference from the front wheels. If you look at your brake line there still may the remnants of the attachment point.

I converted to disc brakes front and rear with fj55 axles, but I'll look closer at the brake lines. The clutch has always been really stiff, but felt usual when I took her out last night. The gas pedal on the other hand was really light and had minimal resistance when stepping on the gas, but it did pop back to its at-rest position after letting off.
