My wife wants a Sequoia...thoughts?

I just can't fathom degressing to a sequoia, 4runner or anything else. LC and LXs are simply the best and you can have the rest.

I am a poet and didn't.....even have any idea.

I have nothing against the Sequoia just don't like it even when it was new, the brand new body still not my taste. I'm sure it can reach 300k with proper maintenance. The main thing for me is it's not made in Japan. Just my 2 pennies.

That was my concern as well. I'd rather have a 4th gen 4Runner or a Lexus GX which all have basically the same power train.

I have a friend with a gen 1 Sequoia-nearly 300k miles. But just like looking at Cruisers, the next generation is always more refined. If you can find one with the miles to make it near your price range, swing for an 08 or newer. They are better in every way--larger, more refined, better mileage (we were getting 20-21 mpg with the tires at 42psi) and will tow a decent camper--we pulled a 29 footer. Plus, it has a few things in common with the 200 series (frame design, engine, transmission) with one huge exception--light off roading is all you will ever be able to do without major, expensive modifications.

But you won't regret it if your wife treads lightly....

I drove a couple of sequoias before I decided to get my cruiser about a month ago. In doing research:

- Longevity is not much of a concern; simple maintenance will keep it running past 300k usually no problem.
- They definitely feel cheap, when compared to a 100 series. Even comparing the leather, you can tell the difference in quality. Had I not ever ridden in a 100, I probably would have never noticed.
- They drive amazing well for being so huge. They park like hell, but move well.
- Priced way cheaper than 100 series.. I could find 06-07 for around 7 to 8k, well maintained.
- 4x4 (at least in Houston) is hard to find. I would say 90% of all the sequoias I looked up were not 4x4.
- 3rd row is made to handle and adult.

I chose the 100, and am glad I made that choice. 4x4 is a must for me, and quality is just as important.

We sold our 01 Sequoia, and bought 98 LC as replacement. One year later, we are still happy with our decision. A few comparison after owning both:

Sequoia has more room. Second and third row has more leg room. Third row seats are higher which means more comfortable for adult. Sequoia is also longer, which barely fits our garage. Turning radius is larger. Paint and interior plastic seems to easily scratched. 4 cupholders in the front which we really missed. Leather seems to be made from tougher material, not necessarily better quality, but just tougher. Plastic headlight that yellowed overtime vs glass headlight on earlier LC.

First gen Sequoia has frame recalled due to rust, also has VSC problem, so make sure you do your research before buying.

LC is shorter, with smaller turning radius, which makes it easier to park. Handling and steering is better. LC has less interior space if that matters to you. We have one kid, and LC has plenty of room for us. The front seats are much more comfy for long trips for us. Build quality overall is better. We love the tailgate - use it all the time for all of us to sit in a park. Full time all wheel drive - no button to push to activate like in Sequoia = wife friendly and I am happy!

EDIT - you have to drive both, preferably one after another, and you should be able to see the differences. I am not trying to knock Sequoia, it was a great car, we own it for 10 years, but there is a good reason why LC cost more.

They both have their merits. If you already have a land cruiser, it would be great to diversify with a current body style sequoia. The current model sequoia is much longer, and in 5.7 guise, more powerful than a hundy. More utility and towing/carrying capacity are solid pros for it. Sure it doesn't have the legacy of the LC, but it is a great car on it's own right and has merits. Can be quite nice and plush in platinum trim.

We test drove an 03 before we got our first 100 and my wife said it felt cheap inside. This is after having owned a few 80s and 60s. The 100 blows it away as far as build quality.
I agree. I test drove one before I got my 100 and hated the interior, which was surprising. Liked everything else about it though.

My sister has a 2015 rear wheel drive Sequoia Limited. While it is nice to drive and has a lot more power (381bhp) than a 100 series it isn't any where near as nice.
The interior is made up of acres of cheap plastic and the leather and vinyl is of a lower quality as well. It is Toyota's take on the Suburban/Expedition. And yes, I am sure it has better build quality and reliability than those 2 but the interior quality of materials is the same.

Boss has a Sequoia for his wife, they have owned it since new, i think it is an 06 or 07. They have not had much trouble out of it, and it is very roomy inside. Can't say its not a good vehicle.
With that said, I have driven it, and it feels like driving a big Camry, if that makes any sense. Kind of felt cheap, hollow plastics, and not sturdy like my LC. Not being negative here, and I have no idea the situation, but in my case, I would try and do some major convincing that the LC would be better long term. Re-sale value, resiliency, TAILGATE, Full-time 4wd, and just an all around well built vehicle that will protect the family in the event of a crash or whatever.
