Sounds like you have a great outlook on life. I agree with you as well. Anything is possible. The more of a wreck it is the more you will enjoy it once it's done.

Keep in mind too, your not building a car from ore. Replace what's broke and fix what needs fixin'. Little body work and some rattle can spray paint can do wonders for any older rig. I think I spent about 4 hours and $20 in paint and bedliner spray on the interior of my 74 and it looks great.

i think you are just fine. people say stuff and mention that things are difficult and i say don't listen. i ask stupid questions in here when i over look something but all in all i know what i am talking about. i got my cruiser when i was 16, i am now 23 and still running it. (76 fj40) between my years of 16-19, i rebuilt the head, replaced the carb, learned proper distributer ajustment, figured out the whiring, rebuilt the axles, redone water pump, pulley, timing gear, replaced steering box (original), replaced entire suspension, rebuilt transmition, replaced transfer case, and a couple other things with zero prior knowledge. i've made my brakes work with ceranwrap, dental floss and gum before.

nothing in any car is complicated, i've never never encountered something that, once i had let frustration subside, found to be too difficult to do.

i think your wife had the right idea buyin it for you. not only does she think you can do it, which you can(no matter how bad it is) but its impressive to make a vehicle work by your own efforts. not only that but you will love this crusher more than a child when it runs correctly and you know why it does so. you will be satisfied with the fruits of your labor. go do it!!

You'll love owning a 40. I think the price is right. And parting it out if all else fails will yield you more than what you paid for it.

I would call the guy and ask him for the Vin # and the state that the title is from. The title may even have a State # on it. Then call the state it is titled in with the Vin # and make sure it is ok.

If he gives you any grief tell him that your insurance company wants it before you tow the vehicle. I would also make sure you get a bill of sale with his license # on it and signed by him.

Make sure the VINS on the body and the frame match. When I titled mine the MVD folks checked the tags on the body and the frame to make sure they were the same.

I spoke with that fellow because I was interested in that vehicle. He has owned it for about a year BUT has not transferred the title out of the owner's name. He does not and will not verify if the numbers match. In all fairness, he seemed like a pretty nice guy who just wanted it out of his garage. We spoke for about 30 minutes. The vehicle was running prior to storage (so he states). The main point I think of the whole deal is this though....it was cheap BUT make sure the title matches the vehicle if you are at all interested in registering it.

Yeah, definately have it checked out or you could have bought one like the headache I got myself into. It's a long and tear jerking story. I have a 75 FJ40 but when I went to get it smogged it came up as a 2000 vehicle from the license plate and the VIN # was not registered. Had to go to a DMV Referee fo further investigation which revealed it was registered as a special built vehicle? ? ? Long story short, I've been going nuts here with the DMV.

Yeah, no doubt about the supportive wife, my old lady will hardly ride with me in the old cruiser. She hated my 78, and just dislikes my 70. Sheesh, I got in trouble for putting gas in the darn thing.

After I bought my 40, she made me trade her 2 year old 4runner for a 9 yr old Land Crusier. Miss the mileage, love the room/seats to make the boy sit in the back so he doesn't bug the living hell out of his sisters.
