Please, please import these into Canada:
http://www.toyota.com.au/landcruiser-70-series
I am far from being the only one who wants a new, durable Toyota that has a turbo diesel, solid front axle, and everything else that the cushy Tundra/Tacoma is not.

If they brought those into North America, they'd sell out before they even hit the showrooms. There'd be 6 month waiting lines.

I agree those are great. But the average North american wants big trucks. I doubt they would sell enough of those to be worth it.

Too small.

Look at how big the Tacoma has evolved. The first thing I thought when I saw the new Tacoma was "wow they dropped the small truck market".

I think the new v8 turbo diesel should be sold in the tundra and tacoma. That would rocket sales.

Without a turbo-diesel 'Cruiser this is one guy who won't be gracing Toyota Canada showrooms in search of new vehicles!!

Yeah, the average North American wants big SUVs and trucks. However, what they want and what they will get may be two different things. With Peak Oil coming on, and prices continually rising for fuel, they just may have to downsize, whether they like it or not. I notice that the Toyota Yaris has had sales rise 35% this year. When the day comes that my wife's Olds Cutlass Supreme finally won't pass Aircare, then she gets a Yaris or else a new rich husband to buy her something bigger. In any case, she sure won't be driving my Cruiser.

More diesels will be sold here soon. This new fuel was the start.

MB is bringing many new diesel models this year. I just seen a review on driving television of a diesel suv. Gets great mileage. I cannot believe people would not want diesel in comparison to a gas pot..

Toyota has it's head up their butt. They just follow the big three around. Just they do it better and more economical. That's why they are #1. Not because their new cars are exciting. GM makes exciting sexy cars... but we all know they are riddled with pensions and healthcare problems and cannot quality control car production to save their asses.

I want a diesel utility wagon. So my BJ60 still fits the bill. That is why I have sunk over 10k into fixing it up to be our main vehicle.

When I can, I will buy either a 100 or 80 series and swap in a diesel powertrain.

Even if Toyota sold a new diesel SUV today I would not be able to afford it till it was 10 yrs old. So I have some waiting to do. :)

How much do you think a new diesel cruiser would cost( I do not mean FJcruiser)? I bet we are talking 100K. Inflation rises quicker than my salary.

A new 2007 diesel '70 series with front and rear lockers, 5 speed, factory winch and cloth interior (no power window crap) new in Guatemala $35,000 US. You could get 3 for 100k!!

The difference from the ones in the link is that in Guatemala it's an inline 6 otherwise identical to the dark one with the frontal view on the banner ad in the link above.

yah a new Fjcruiser is in that price range too....

but lets talk markets(this is my pet peeve).... In canada I doubt a new 70 series would sell for 35,000 US. In fact using that price it would be 41 ish with exchange.

right now our dollar is close to the USA. But out pricing on new Toyotas is set like our dollar is still 1.50. A new Seinna van sells in the usa for 24 or less, up here 30k. So with exchange it isn't adding up. They have these new toyotas priced for our market.

So what they sell them in Central America is not going to compare with what they would sell them for in Canada.

to learn more about these discrepancies in price see www.drivingtv.ca

brownbear, is there a text version of this? The bandwidth required is just too high, but I would LOVE to read more about WHY our prices are so high here.

What else is new? We've been getting over charged for stuff here in Canada for years, why should it be any different now?

Free trade?!?!? Never heard of it!!

If we didn't have the 15 year rule to protect the domestic vehicle market I'd be driving a newer 'Cruiser diesel from Central America.

btw, vehicle import duties in Central America are pretty steep. I think Toyota Canada/USA hikes the price to keep the domestic vehicle manufacturers from crying foul for "dumping" vehicles here.

I hope not, I don't think I could take you driving around a new 105 :)
I would want it SOOOO bad.

BTW: I think you could import a 105 (legally).
Its essentially a 100 series with a SFA and turbo diesel.
Since a similar model is imported to Canada (LX470) and the 100 is imported to the US you might get it in.

IT just HAS TO meet Canadian spec as is, which I think it would.
You would also get hassled way less because its LHD. In fact I doubt you would ever have any issues with being pulled over or questioned. It is essential a 100 as I mentioned.

Would be super cool. If you are serious, I could contact my fiend with the CVSE.
He could talk to his boss in Victoria. If says its okay, then you should be good.
Get a letter from him, before you even buy it. As long as they are cool with it, you should be good.
It's up to them how they enforce the rules. LHD and matches everything the LX470 has for safety and they should be good.

Cheers,
Nick

Ask and see what they say! I kind of doubt that they would be OK with it though. If they are OK ask for the letter!

I haven't seen a 105 (solid front axle) down there but I have seen a white 100 turbo-diesel (I think one of the U.S. embassy staff drive it) and of course the '80 and '70 series!

I'd be after a more stripped down version than the top level ones like the Lexus up here. Cloth interior, manual windows etc. is more my style.

I will ask for you. Call him at lunch.

A white 100 diesel would be awesome! I would really want one.
It would be super cool for you to get one. Would it replace the 60 for a more comfortable commuter? I am sure the 55 and 60 would be great for the boys.

If you could get a 100, it also paves the way for LHD 80's as well. :)
If they allow the 100, the would probably allow a 80.
MIght be a cheaper option. Heck I would like that in a few years.
I have decided to go with the zuk for now.

Cheers,
N.

[...]manual windows etc. is more my style.
I've heard that manual window cranks are more expensive to manufacture than electric ones nowadays, soon they won't be available anymore...

Could be but they don't break so often!!

The electric windows in my 77 Mercedes are still fully operational... Companies just need to build the parts like they did back in that day. :)
