General shots

Know you guys like pic's so these are general shots. IF the machine shop is finished with the adapter we should get the engine, tranny, and tcase mounted this week to test fit the body.

..the steering components are coming out of a Mits D500 truck but they are not here yet. They are much more robust than the stock LC.

My partner, Michael was into racing 40's and has a lot of experience with where the weak points are on the LC, there is a birf mod done here that I have no experience with but the jest of it is you machine down the birf and enclose it with a steel ring. I will be interested to see how that's accomplished as I have no clue.

With the 15bf we are afraid that when wheeling the strain will be too much on the stock steering components (bend/break) .

We will be using 70 series springs, ordered but not here, eventually...we have just about decided NOT to go SOA because we are going to have to cut the oil pan anyway. I would like to keep it as low as possible as it will be a daily driver and I don't feel like climbing up in the truck everyday.

.we will re-arch the 70 springs to get a little more lift. The 70 springs are brand new out of Japan so should last a while.

On this I am lucky

I'm really lucky in that my asawa:princess: supports this endeavor and can't wait for it to be finished...for that matter neither can I...

Had to order the metal from Manila to make the adapter, it finally came yesterday and is in the machine shop as we speak..15bf started and runs good..no smoke and smooth. Was surprised to see how quiet it was..may just run a 3" stainless exhaust w/o muffler. Will post more when I get the adapter back and engine mounted..Lee

Hi Lee,

You may find that you will need to turbo charge the engine to run it without a muffler. It may be quiet now, but at full throttle it will be very loud.

Good work on running the new tires white letter in - Aussies love the white letter out, but I have a pet peeve about that... must be from living in New Mexico for so long and seeing all those rigs with Chihuahua plates running white letter out....

Josh

Josh, I got the same problem, hence white in...will also spray inside flat black b4 its on the road..Lee

Adapter plate fabricated

The adapter plate is fabricated and mocked up, not pretty but it works and is strong , the 70 series springs are here. Engine should be mounted shortly..

Ha ha.

How do you really know Aussies "love the white letter out" Josh?

I'm a kiwi (which is not quite an Aussie but close) and I indeed run "white letters out" but only because I see it as "the lesser of two evils".

I run them facing out because when they face inwards the lettering is still quite visible to my eye, and I think it looks even more unpalatable.

If I could find tyres of similar price/performance/appearance to my BFG KM2s WITHOUT white lettering I'd most certainly buy them in preference.

PS. Americans like chrome bling. ;)

I as an American know for a fact some do love the bling bling chrome. My white letters were put on the outside because my father inlaw is Filipino and he took my tires and wheels via his tricycle to a vulcanizing shop and did not know better but beats hell out of walking and the letters are so small can't see them much anyway. I don't care much for shine or bling I am ex military so flats or subdued are my choices but the wifey like a little color :) Here in the Philippines you cannot just change vehicle color at will. The color has to match what is on the OR/CR Original Registration. You can however go to LTO Land Transportation office and get a request to change color for about $10 U.S. But most don't do it and just deal with it when they get caught by the Highway Patrol lol!

Crazy!

Here you're free to change your colour at no cost. But the next time you relicense your vehicle you must notify the NZ Transport Agency of the new colour (which is done simply by having "colour" as a category on the relicencing application form).

More pic's

The springs are up, not permanently mounted yet as there is still a lot of fabricating to do..The pictures will show the difference between the stock and the 70's. With the longer length and two less springs the BJ40 should ride better and give more travel. I'm a little concerned about tire clearance as we decided not to go SOA but will address that when the problem presents itself. I don't particularity want to do a body lift but imagine I will have to cut on the rear fenders, which I am not fond of. The truck will not be rock climbing but will be used in the mountains around here a lot. Many steep ditches etc. The front will be reversed to keep the shackles from digging in. As always any advise will be appreciated as I am winging this from a old used up brain....Thanks Lee

More pictures 2

More suspension pictures, I also found a set of AVM lock outs to get rid of the selectros, don't flame me as I got them for free. Free is good..:)

Lostmarbles, see not all yanks like bling, and a little flat black paint takes care of seeing the ugly letters on the inside.

Now a question for the guys way smarter than me

Does anyone know what this is, I in my misguided mind believe it is a old Toyota supercharger. Mainly because of the size of the intakes and exhaust. It has twin vanes and was found about ten years ago in Manila at a scrap dealers by a friend of mine who was buying A/C compressors at the time. It was with them..cost about 500 pesos...it has several vacuum lines attached to what looks to me like a switch. It has a electric clutch mounted which reminds me of some of the old switch mounted superchargers that use to be mounted on VW mods and some old English sports cars..The clutch is set up for a ribbed belt instead of a v belt so maybe a serpentine installation? Any thoughts on this? It's got me baffled and the only plate or numbers on it are in the pictures...It's definitely Toyota Thanks Lee

Matthew, turns out it's a SC14 I started a thread on it in Diesel section..Hope things are going good for you.

Adapter plate installed

Finally the adapter plate is back from the machine shop and installed it works good and I am going to clean up the edges (grind and sand) to make it look a little cleaner..with luck engine will be in frame tomorrow so we can figure out exactly where to mount it. Thanks for looking..Lee

Lee,

Things are going well. I had an email today from a Canadian 40 owner asking about the hinges. Did customs ever let you get yours?

More pictures and 70 series ff axle installed

We finally got the 70 series ff rear axle installed. Using the ff axle will give me a little more strength. The long side of the axle has been reenforced as it came out of a truck that was used for 4x4 racing here. It also gives me the rear actuated parking brake system which I will use to set up a individual rear braking system ( I think the Aussies and Brits call them fiddle brakes) like we have on tractors in the states,

70 series spring set up

This is how we set up the front 70 series springs, we were doing it today so the frame is not boxed yet but will be (1/4 inch plate), try as we might we could not find pins for the shackles so we made them out of old shock tube, machined the ends and welded them up, seems like it will work fine. The amount of lift is yet undetermined as we still have to mount the drive train to see what we end up with...I don't know if you can tell in the pictures but the components we fabbed for the hangers are 1/4 inch plate the only problem I saw was that the components were stronger than the frame, hence the boxing when we get done. Hopefully we can finish most of this today so we can mount the drive train tomorrow. We are not going to address the rear set up until we see how it sits with drive train. All the welding is done with stick as there is not a mig available here. As always your comments are invaluable...Thanks Lee
