Ok so here goes... I've had my 1987 toyota 4runner SR5 for over six years now... It's a luv/hate thing that no one would understand. Well, Maybe D'animal  or maybe not. I'm glad he did not bill me for the therapy sessions on why I want and do not want my 4runner :D.

Shes blown a couple of piston rods before a semi rebuild and had lots of other work done. Still looks like a beater but for now, I'm messing with the Interior because she's mechanically to the point where she runs..

INTERIOR:
All original, ugly and dirty. Drivers was to the metal, rear is limp and passenger was tolerable. No stereo and and missing nuts and bolts here and there. THE ONE GOOD THING IS THAT IT HAS THE TOP clinometer? IS that what you call it? anyways

My Mom had to junk a semi clean 93 4runner sr5 with the v6 and horrible head gasket problem because the guy she sold it to dumped it in New Orleans... And she had to go junk it (Don't ask super long story) She asked if I needed anything, I said Interior seats, seat belt buckles, visor(which did not fit) and the radiator (that one did fit :D)

After a while in storage I decided to get to work. (FRONT SEATS) They were complete with minor tears and dirty ugly! I decided to get the interior covers fixed ($150 for one headset vinyl replace, seat side vinyl replace, 1/4 of seat cover replace, and re-stitched the edges of the rear pockets) I pulled them and took them to the shop myself to save $$.

The foam is in good shape but the head rests were breaking in half.

I used gorilla glue and they came out good as new.

Taking the covers off was not too bad but had to carefully remove the hook rings that held everything together.

Treated and Washed covers my self (Car wash charges $80 to shampoo carpet and interior)

I was able to use the Driver seat from the 93 but had to keep the passenger seat in the 87 because of the sliding all the way fwd feature. So I pretty much swapped foam and covers from the 93 to the 87 and was able to install one of the rail trim/covers from the 93 on the 87 frame.

Now the passenger seat was rubbing and had to adjust it towards the door.

I plan to epoxy a piece of sheet metal behind the crack to join them together. Any suggestions? Would JB weld work?

I plan to move the center switches to make room and a cleaner set up.

ANY SUGGESTIONS ON A REASONABLY PRICED CENTER CONSOLE?

Fyi the 2ndGen visors will swap in, but you have to use the stock mounting swivels. And you can use the newer 4Runner pass side seat, you have to take it apart and swap the back and bottom onto the stock super slider frames.

Good stuff there!!!!

Nice work!

For the reasonably-priced console:
Smittybilt sells one for 90-ish or, what I did was drill out bolt-holes in the bottom of a .50 Cal. ammo can, and bolt it into the stock mounting hardpoints. It's fugly, and far from perfect, but it keeps my wallet out of sight when I'm at the gym, and keeps my Zune from blinding me when I drive at night (which is most of my driving). You might also find one from a first-gen 4Runner or second-gen pickup for a fair price at a scrapyard.

Hehe, no rivet grinding involved... pull the trim off the sides of the seats, pull the 2 bolts from each side of the bottom, unhook the wire clips holding the back of the seat fabric together at the bottom rear of the seat back, pull the cover up some till you can get to the 2 bolts on each side of the seat back...

Install on original seat sliders.

I had to do some floor panel work to make clearance for my tcase ebrake, and while I was doing it i took the section from the rocker to the center console, found some used/broken switches on ebay and soldered them all together. That wa everything is still factory connectors. I eliminated the rear wiper, left the window lock in the drivers side kick panel (where the harness meets the extension cord) and ran the rear window control switch to the blank above the radio.

Ill try to get you some pics of it.

As for the center console, I used a 5.56 (.223) ammo can, cut the bottom off, extended it about3 inches, fabbed up some super duty cupholders and bolted it in. I mounted my connex to the back and now i have a TON more storage up front plus my cupholders !! I can make it lockable if I want, but those ammo boxes are pretty water tight.

extending the ammo can, genius!
I'm right now wishing I'd raised my "console" up about three inches. I May yet, we'll see, I'm thinking a bracket with my radio underneath it would be about ideal.
Thanks for contributing, and making me think a bit!

So I decided to go ahead and try to repair the shifter boot trim...
After scrubbing with dish soap I used galvanized piece and JB weld.

Hope it works.

I tried exactly the same thing, only with epoxy. It didn't matter, the plastic was just so brittle from being sooo old, it picked another place to crack. The last time I took it out, the thing just fell apart in my hands, it was depressing.

Gonna try to fab something up with sheet aluminum and fiberglass.

^Too bad the market is strictly wheelers and collectors b/c you could make some decent $ making those in a reproduced item.

Maybe Corey @ Toyota Fiberglass can make some that you could then spray to match? Make a batch of them.

I know but this is the family car at the moment. And I would if it wast just for me... But since this will also be our trip mobile, at least till I get my 60 back in shape, I plan to give the :princess: and my two little ones a couple of creature comforts for the time being.

why? it looks sissy just take it out bed line your floor and have a tough truck!

Well, Using the metal strip made it strong... Looks like it will hold for a very long time. I'm working on the other side and need to do it at the corner as well before moving fwd on this item.

Created line out of 14 Ga wire and used color electrical tape to lable them. Moved them to radio trim and female connections were done with spade male connectors w/tips cut in half to fit. Was able to connect the 5 female connectors to the rear window switch but connecting the 8 female connectors to the rear wiper switch was another story, they touch.... So I will trim if I don't find a OEM female connection to splice in...

I'm even temped to shampoo the carpet for a blingy pre-owned look. ;)

I picked up a console from the wreckers out of a '04 Tacoma. You also need to get the front piece and shifter boot so they match and fit together properly. Had to mod the bracket under the console part to make it fit properly. Sits higher so it makes a better arm rest and it has 2 nice cup holders as a bonus. You can see a bit of it in the pic, sorry about the mud but it was a lot of fun getting it muddy.
