When I imported this summer I crossed at Pempina, ND too no problems really. They didn't even look in the truck. It took a while at the boarder but I didn't really understand how the chain of events goes. You pay your RI your RI pays the customs broker and then the broker pays the board patrol your duty and all.

The one thing that sucks is you have to pay taxes (duty) when you bring the vehicle across the boarder and then again when you register it here in KS to get tags. Your tax for KS is based on the amount on the bill of sale, which is what you'd expect. But, they were fussy not using the exact numbers that were on the bill of sale because they were in Canadian Dollars. So make sure the bill of sale clearly states currency it could save/cost you some serious cash.

Canadian dollars are less than U.S. so if they converted you should have saved some cash as the final number would have been lower!!! $1 Canadian is about $0.83 US so a $10,000 Canadian bill is a $8300 US bill.

Yep and back at the end of July it was like .74 USD per CAD so the difference as well as my frustration level was even higher. Which makes a dated bill of sale nice too.

JD:

Would you mind PM'ing me Christophe's number? I am interested in his bj40. As well, great information. Thank you.

One thing: How did you import an 87?

don't take all our nice diesel's south! but they are great.

Dave:

I worked on Greg's BJ60 last night for about 6 hours, and my freaking hand was dirty, covered with grease in less than half an hour! It certainly is not like working on clean JDM diesels. :D

But, I can see where Greg has poured blood and sweat into his rig, and understand a little why he is so attached to it, even though there are plenty of accessible JDM diesels that come better equiped right off the boat.

Cheers.

So it looks like importing a similar body style is easy [fj-60 vs bj/hj-60], but what about importing a body style we never sold. Bj-74/70??? Anyone have experience with this one?

at this point it is completely illegal... and not recommended but i hope to change all that...

At this point you don't want Greg to pour any more blood into his rig. Sweat or tears would be OK ;)

Wayne- I think I understand the intricacies of why it's no possible- but I still dream about getting an hzj75 legally into the states. Any advice, other than to keep dreaming and wait for them to be older than 25? Thanks, Luke

Have title!

I wanted to provide an update of sorts. I received my Texas title this weekend. So I'm 100% legal now. They didn't really give me too much grief at the DMV either. That was a month and 1/2 ago almost though.

Hi gang,

Several years ago, I brought imported a USA registered 5 ton in Canada. It was fairly easy.

THis site was very helpful: http://www.mr2.com/TEXT/Import.html

The writer imported an MR2 into Canada. I assume the procedure is similar importing into US from Canada.

Use a broker. They will charge you very little and are a big help. Also, the US Customs people were great - very professional & helpful.

Sincerely,
