I’m not sure if it was a vent for a aftermarket heater.
I have one of those round air vents too. It was installed on a 65 fj45. It is pretty cool, I have been considering using as a snorkel inlet on the 45. I like the the vent find look factory like the vent find for the blower intake on the cowl. Neat pieces!

Did they normally do it on the cowl or on the fender apron?

The 65 fj45 that my vent was removed from had it located on the passenger side cowl.

I’m hoping the 45’s will be getting picked up this week or next week. The guy I bought my LV from told me it was only missing the rear bumper, hood spear, and light switch. I spent some time today removing a hood spear and front bumper off a 69 FJ40 I have. The front bumper on the LV is all bent up, so I wanted to have this one off before it got here. I was able to save all the bolts, only had one that gave me some problems. I think the bumper & bolts will blend in good with the rest of the LV

BTW,
There's a black widow spider under the hood. Big one. Beware. Hopefully he dropped out on the trip.View attachment 2040684
Hahaha that bastard was waiting for me as soon as I opened up the passenger side door. I welcomed him to New Jersey with the bottom of my shoe
