Nice shop "all snap on" and nice cruiser what can I say.
subscribe....
cheers

Thanks guys.

O.K trying to get my pics all in order and it appears I have lost a memory card somewhere. So there will be a small time frame missing for now.
Unfortunately the main pic I want is of the rolled 3FE V.X ltd I found with 60 000KM on the clock. Again not a S.A market cruiser and how I found 2 x V.X ltd I don't know. Pics to follow.

The V.X ltd that I found had every thing I wanted. Brand new grey swayed leather, fridge between the seats, factory compass, electric mirrors windows and central locking, rear window demister and wiper, rear disc brakes.

So my plan was to strip what I needed and sell the rest for parts. But in Africa Cruisers are king and to strip this for parts at such low KM would be mad. So I decided to Weld a new roof on it, swop all my things over and give it a lick of paint. This would become a awesome farm truck if I put all my old gear on. 4'' J spring OME lift Copper STT 35. And all the U.N government spec goodies. So I stripped it down, cleaned boxed and marked all the goodies I wanted and started the Farm Truck build.

(I need to find the memory card with the tear down and assembly pics)

I took all the G.X crome trimmings that come std on the G.X, door handles, mirrors, weather strips and swopped them over.
I always have painted the black around the glass think it finishes it off nicely.

My boiler maker is a wizard at making things so he whipped up some bumpers for me.

All the interior parts bolted in 100% without a hitch. I was able to remove the wiring looms on ether side on the floor for electric windows and the central locking.

This is something we never got here in E.F.I and not in a 80.

I have some questions about the motor.

1. How important is the small compressor driven buy the fan belt on the right of the pic? (next to the radiator hose) In the accident it bent the pulley and I cant get just the pulley from Toyota they sell the compressor as a unit. I made a new pulley but the diameter is wrong. ( engine runs fine.)

2.The temp senders on the catalistic converters are been ripped off buy the bushes all the time here. Can I leave them off? It only ever drives in low range but it eats petrol. Quite a mission when its the only thing on the farm that's petrol.

Its done a bit of K.M now since the build on the farm.

Even the radio was still factory when I found it. The before pics would show why I was so excited to find it. It was like brand new.

Nice find!

1. The little compressor is actually a smog pump, that is used to meet emissions regulations. If you don't have emissions standards to meet, you can delete this pump and many other parts on that side of the engine. Just search MUD for "3FE desmog" and you'll find a lot of info and instruction.

2. The" temps sensors" are Oxygen sensors that are essential for proper operation of the 3FE. You can't delete them. If you do, you'll get a Code 22 on your computer and the motor will stumble quite a bit. My truck actually has small protective brush guards that keep them from getting damaged in the brush. Maybe yours have been removed, but I'm sure you could source them somewhere.

Good luck. I hope this helps.

It was soon after this engine rebuild that I thought. If I was going to redo my Cruiser I would need a workshop that only I was going to go into.
A ''MANCAVE'' for the like of a better word. So I built a w/s that could take my Cruiser with the wheels and lift. At 3m high and 12m wide this would work.

Got some tools and nuts and bolts and the Man Cave was done.

nice workshop!

To get my Cruiser build on the go I needed to do a few things in order.

1. Remove and fit new engine. test and tune it up.
2. When the farm truck was assembled mine would be in a disassembly stage. two birds one stone.
3. Get a 1995 and up grey dash. to match the new interior.
4. assemble my truck after the body shop.
5. Start to strip the diffs and suspension out.
6. assemble all diffs and suspension.

After a long search I found a very clean grey dash for a 1995 and up.
I whipped out my brown African sun eaten dash and found a huge mess behind it.

Cruisers in S.A are in big demand to car thieves. But why the alarm guys don't just remove the old alarm when fitting a new one is beyond me. I found 3 behind the dash all NOT working. So I removed 2 of them and got it all back to factory spec. Incl the Toyota original one working again without a problem.

Over the years of owning my Cruiser I fitted a few things, duel batt gauge, more power points, switch for this and that. Over time as hard as you can try, behind the dash becomes a birds nest of wires. So I took the time to run all the wires in the same position as the factory harness.

After cleaning out all the air ducts and wires it was time for the new dash to go in. But first fit the grab handle.

P1030646.webp

Its quite easy to fit these handles the steel plate with threads are behind the dash, so just push a pin through to get the centre.

P1030688.webp

The handle is almost a straight bolt you need to take a hole saw and cut the foam off the dash. (you only get one chance to get it right.)

I cleaned all the switches and got hem ready for assembly.

P1030694.webp

Then assembled and lubed up all the doors. I orded new door and window rubbers as mine were quite hard.

P1030647.webp

P1030654.webp

I removed the rubber beading around the door handles and sprayed them black again think it gives it a nice new finish.

P1030664.webp

On the lighter coloured V.X I noticed the screws that hold the latch to the door are silver. And the darker colours are black. Because mine was originally dark blue I orded and fitted new silver ones.

The dark ones just look wrong.

Those bolts are cad plated. Anodizing is for aluminium.

Thanks NLXTACY When I get to the suspension I picked up problems with it. Not sure if the guys here did it right but you can rub it off with you hands. Even my engine has no shine on the bolts anymore. Next time I will clear coat before I use them.

I also like the factory look so got stickers for the child lock. On the inside of the back doors. P.S the boot lid sticker is not the same as the doors.

Got the new bolts

I then took the loom that runs the electric windows and central locking, on both sides of the floor. cleaned and fitted them. My car is a 1998 and the doner a 1992. There was a difference in the plugs at the kick panels. My harness from the bash down had the responding plugs there already. But because of the year model difference I had to cut the sides of off the female plug. I also had to fit 1 relay into the r.h fues holder for the central locking to work and 100% every thing works no pins to be moved or swopped no power feeds to be run all working.

The only other problem was the plugs for the electric mirrors. Looks like because the V.X has retractable side mirrors the plugs differ.

Before the carpet could go in I needed to cut the holes in the floor for the fridge. I did do a much better job of this. My panel beater had a go at it first. Where I live in S.A if you don't do every thing your self you will never get it done right.

P1030648.webp

I saw on a forum that the carpet was no longer available for the 80. Tried my luck at Toyota and 4 weeks later.

Also orded the manual console and boot for the gear shift. Fitted the fridge.

P1030713.webp

Sprayed up the speaker covers and got the sound working.

P1030696.webp

Put the seats in.
P1030748.webp

P1030750.webp

This became the biggest problem for my build. My old seats had the belt clip spot welded to the seat frames. The older V.X had the bolted to the floor. All the holes where there but one. The front passenger side had the hole but no thread. The hole too was about 15mm big. And to make things worse it was boxed in underneath buy a cross member.
