Hey Danny, excellent news about the hikes, and how good it felt to you. I know from personal experience just how much walking helps with recovery after back surgery. I'm able now to do almost the same things I did prior to my accident. I do have limitations I have found, and I think you will find some also. However, I did push the envelope a bit, and I expect you will also. That careful pushing is how we find our limits, and even can extend our limits over time.

It is real good to see you are now able to get back out in 44. I don't care if these trips were in areas you previously reported on. Every time you go out you will see something new that you had missed before. The bullfrog is a good example, and the "forest fire" is another good example.

I have always heard from retirees how they got so busy they wondered how they previously had time to even hold down a job. Now I understand. For a person who has always been active it is not hard to do. Anyway, enjoy your "vacation", and we will be looking forward to hearing about your upgrades to 44, and other projects, after Thanksgiving.

Don

Thanks for the kind words and the wisdom, Don'm

Hey, Danny ! The :princess: and I are headed to Vegas for a conference, today, actually. Gonna be in town for 3 days, and leave on Thursday.

I dont know what our itinerary will be, but I was thinking I should take a 'test drive' while we were out there. Wonder if any Avis / Hertz / Enterprise rents Land Crusiers... LOL. You've shared so many wonderful pics and stories, I would love to have my -40 out there to follow some of your very same trails - albeit without the McGuyver's we all seem to have to do on these ole trucks.

Continue to get better, and keep sending pics of da boise in -44's natural habitat !

Sorry Erik!! I'm taking a hiatus from MUD and was out in the Big Empty... hope y'all had a great time in Vegas!!

I'm still not here... I just logged on to answer @Big Ed's PM and report that I had to abort another trip... this time, 44 wouldn't start.

She went to bed happy and didn't wake up... I tried a number of things, to no avail...

Since I happened to have a cell signal, I called Dianna and asked her to drive the Tundra 20 miles to the DNWR and then 22 miles north on Alamo Road... I also asked her to bring the tow bar... by the time she got there (2 hours), I had drained the battery and the jump box and was covered in the 1" fine dust that I had been crawling around in...

Then, I realized I neglected to ask her to bring the hitch receiver, for the Tundra... so, I hooked up a chain and Dianna towed me the 22 miles to the paved entry of the DNWR... we left 44 there and drove home... I dropped her and daBoise off and picked up the hitch receiver and drove back to 44... I thought she was already gone... the Dune Beige, covered in fine dust was a perfect camo where when she was parked... So, she was still there!!

I tied off the steering wheel, hooked her up to the Tundra, aired her tires back up, drove her home and backed her into the garage... I'll get her running this weekend... about the time I got home, it dawned on me that the hood lock/ignition interrupt is probably screwed from the harness melt a while back... it worked since then, but has been contrary a couple of times...

Anyway... I finally got pictures of a Big Horn Sheep Ram... he was 1/2 mile to a mile away... the first picture is a tarantula that was much closer than the ram...

More pictures - Chester and I hiked 2 miles up (~800' ascent) Hidden Forest Trail (Deadman Canyon)... I forgot how strenuous this hike is... is very tough hiking, up a perpetual grade... the wash (trail) is all loose rock/gravel/scree

Beautiful pics! Sorry to hear about your 44 troubles, I'm curious as to the issue that left you stranded.

Danny I'm confused, is there life after MUD?
Beautiful pics! Sorry to hear about your 44 troubles, I'm curious as to the issue that left you stranded.

Most definitely life after MUD!! I spent too many months tied to a chair or bed and chained to my iPad, iPhone or laptop and had to relearn how to live life vicariously though my own actions... I'm nearly there!'

Two issues...

1. The new VR, I installed after my harness meltdown, was telling the alternator to charge too low (13.7v)... Leaving the battery not fully charged.

2. The Hood Lock and Ignition Interrupt immobilizer is not always disengaging, when I unlock the hood... More confusing was, it was re-engaging hours after I had unlocked the hood... I presume it was damaged, as a result of the meltdown, just didn't show up until later... You know electronics... Electrical damages don't always present right away. I've removed/bypassed the immobilizer for now and will wait to hear from the manufacturer about a replacement. Note: that ignition interrupt is so unobtrusive, I tend to forget all about it being there... I can't tell you how many times I forget to unlock it and only remember after cranking the engine.

I'm going to do as Michael (@waiting for time) suggested... And add an aux battery setup... But, I'm going back out in the morning to finish the trip Chester and I were enjoying when 44 passed out... I'll add th aux battery later.

In the meantime, I've recharged my jump box and also have a fully charged battery, from our Casita, that I will carry along... Just in case...

A huge DANKUWEL to Rudi (@bj40green), for answering some questions via PM!!

I ultimately removed my hood lock and immobilizer for the simple reason that one day it just wouldn't unlock (stuck in locked position), needless to say I removed it and returned it to AMAZON for a full refund, what a PIA and POS. I'm hunting for a good Toyo OEM hood lock that might fit my 40, any recommendations are welcome.
What's your final solution on the lock does it still work?

Yeah, the lock works fine... That's actually what I bought it for... To keep the hood locked...And I've never had a problem with it... Except, I learned earlyon that you had to pull the lock all the way out, while you have the key in it and rotate the key back to locked before you remove the key.

I just tested it again and I'm a bit perplexed.... The lock AND the ignition interrupt work FINE, with the immobilizer removed from th equation... At least the installation instruction called it an immobilizer.

With this installed lock-HERE-fuse-coil+, 44 will crank, but won't start, regardless of heather the lock is pushed in (locked)... With it removed, 44 starts fine, with th lock unlocked (popped out), but NOT when it's locked (pushed in).

The hood remains locked with the lock pushed in and unlocked with the lock popped out.

I guess I'll see what the manufacturer says.

In the meantime, I'm gone bush again.

It's too bad that 44 gave you the trouble out in the bush. Bad place for problems, but that's Murphy for you. It's good that you seem to have found the problem though. Going out and facing what gave problems in the first place is real good. That should scare the gremlins off.

When it comes to adding the second battery I will be watching that closely. My pickup (94 K2500 with the 6.5 diesel) is close to needing new batteries. It has two 12V batteries stock, so it isn't cheap to get new batteries. That motor is a battery hog with glow plugs first, then spinning a starter that is more powerful than gasser starters. I'm trying to learn what batteries are real strong, and the best way to hook them up.

Please don't blame 44, Don... ;) it was me who tried my level best to burn her down... she's just not comfortable with me yet... :(

As you can see, we're back from the bush early ... again.

Chester and I had a long 14 hours in bed last night... we drove about 38 miles east on Mormon Well Road and camped at 6k', in a valley, surrounded by high mountains. The sun was gone by 4pm... by 4:30, we were freezing. Chester pleaded with me. We had hiked 4 miles, with a 400' climb (both ways) and Chester was tired... well, truth be told, I was tired too. So, we adjourned to bed and listened to an audio book. We were warm and toasty, but ready to get out of bed as soon as the Super Moon set and it wasn't so bright out.

Here's 44 from the 400' ridge

IMG_2577.webp

We got up this morning, ate breakfast, pulled 44 behind some junipers ... it's behind Chester

IMG_2608.webp

...and headed out for a hike, with a higher ridge in mind... it was only a 2.6 mile round trip, but had an 800' ascent ( and an 800' descent).

The pictures, from this ridge, really don't show how just spectacular this view is... but, here ya go:

After the hike, we loaded up and continued east on Mormon Well... my intent was too cross US 93 and follow the Coyote Springs trail (I think that's the name) and make our was to Kane Springs, the Rainbow Canyon and Caliente, NV.

But, 44 had other plans... she ran really rough a couple of times... I pulled off the road and checked the fuel filters - both clean... I also tried an Okie Rebuild... she ran fine after that until mile 45 (of 47), then she started running rough again, but it's all downhill to US 93, so I decided to try to make it to the pavement this time. Around mile 46, she died... we coasted to the pavement.

I was sure it was a fuel delivery issue, but it turned out to be the NEW coil I installed last time out - bought in June, installed in Nov, dead a week later

Order Date: 06/22/2016

Part No. Description Price Qty. Subtotal
90919-02083 COIL, IGNITION 59.31 1 59.31

I reinstalled my ancient coil and 44 was happy again... but, Danny was tired and dirty and we have strong winds forecast for tomorrow (only)... so, since we were at the highway, I elected to come home and go back out on Thursday.

Anyway... no cooling problems... no charging problems... so, 44 is starting to appreciate me again.

On the way down the mountain, I spotted Bambi and her parents... they were about a quarter mile away, but they waited until I was out of 44 and a hundred yards down the road, on foot... once I was ready, they tried various poses, eventually hitting the pose I wanted...

This is really random, but I think you'll appreciate as much if not more then most.

Today I ate some food coloring; I dyed a little on the inside.

Wait until it comes out and you think you're bleeding out... :p
