I like that you notice the little details like flowers in your pics that most people walk by and ignore. Looked like a nice trip

Thanks Dave!! We had a great trip... And flowers aren't always so plentiful out there...

Technical Question:

I recently replaced the shackles, spring pins and bushings ... but, when crawling very slowly, over very rough terrain, I hear and feel a "pop" from the left front... seems to be suspension related... I've checked shocks, springs, motor mounts and everything I can think of... and everything is tight.

Could the spring pack be 'popping"?

Is there something I should do to the pack itself?

Ideas??

Thanks!!

Danny it sounds like a bind to me, did you try loosening the shackle while the vehicle is on flat ground and full weight on the springs? Try that and torque bolts to 40 Ft./Lbs, and lube pin (liberally), hate that word.

Priceless Pic! Precious Chester he is Sooo cool!

Thanks Mike - I'll give it a shot - before we leave again next Thursday.

Thanks Mike!! Chester is turning into a GREAT companion... the K9 Cop trainer I hired is outstanding!! He's a great watchdog too!!

I'm taking him out again on Thursday... some of the hikes we take are too hard on Gunner... I have to give him Rimidyl afterwards... they are both great dogs!!

It's odd... I've found that my pinched nerve is not nearly as noticeable when I'm wearing my 8" boots... so, I'm hiking much more than I expected... and that's a good thing!!

Love those flowers!!! Flowers were some of my favorite subjects when out camping. Rather difficult to get real good pics as the wind would move them when I was ready to shoot. But, this was before digital photography, and I never knew for sure if I had a good pic until the slides were processed. Had to have been way more than 20 years ago as my kids are 28 now (I think). My memory sure plays tricks on me any more.

Your descriptions of your trips in 44 really get my foot itchin. Oh how I wish I could afford to get my 40 running right away, but getting medical bills paid off comes first.

Great pictures,Danny and sounds like a great trip!I have been offroading today myself and made my 40 so dirty and fell in the bad rut in the mudhole and it messed up my nail on the hand after steering wheel spin.It took me 2 hours to wash my truck after the trip.keep on posting...

Sorry about your hand, Mike!!

But, I'll bet you had a ball!!

Wow... don't know how I fell so far behind on your thread. But reading through it was a treat. Glad to see you on the mend, feeling better, and posting up pics of the gorgeous desert you call the back yard.

I really appreciate this thread and the varies subjects it takes on. Lots of fun content.

So where did you get a custom Molle panel? I've been thinking of putting them on the undersides of my jumpseats so that when they are folded up I can stow stuff.

John Wilde at Wilde Custom Gear - great products!!

Thanks!!

Alamo Road, in the DNWR, has been closed at the dry lake for some time... Necessitating an 88 mile round trip, at about 15-25 mph.

I learned the other day that the refuge has cut a road around the dry lake, so you can now drive the entire 78 mile length of Alamo Road.

I'm not terribly fond of Alamo Road, it's nearly as pretty a drive as Mormon Well Road. But, I need to drive the entire length and really wanted to hike the 7k' mountains around Cabin Springs...

So, Chester and I planned a trip up Alamo Road, with a 4 day stay at Cabin Springs, an 18 mile round trip offshoot from Alamo Road.

But, a tropical depression off the Pacific side of Mexico has cropped up and we have 3-4 days of rain forecast over the period we planned for our trip... The last thing I want to do is be out 50+ miles offroad, in mountains that are subject to fairly massive flooding.

So, the trip is off... For now... But Gunner and Chester and I drove about 20 miles up Alamo Road today, just to get out of the house... I was right, Alamo Road is parched and, while there are flowers, it's much more bleak than Morman Well Road.

Anyway, here are a few pictures...

I think your making a wise decision. Just watched the weather and it's not looking good. They are calling for more storm activity by the end of next week too.

Yeah... I checked every place within 5 hours and they all have rain for the next 3-6 days. I would take the truck and trailer and camp somewhere, but Chester is a 75 lb sponge and a mud magnet...

I guess I'll do some woodworking instead... I also have a couple of repairs to make on our travel trailer.

I'd rather be out there, but, it is what it is...

I've seen the damage done by rain in those rocky mountains and I don't want any part of it!!

Buddy of mine had one of his Samurais destroyed in AZ by flash floods - his kid had taken it into a deep dry wash and had a breakdown issue . After an hour trip to get parts/rescue party they came back to a flooded wash from storms 30 miles away in the mountains - and no sign of the truck . Four days later , another group found what was left of the rig - just a big white ball of metal . Engine/trans/tcase was all they could salvage and never did find one door , the hood , top and wheels/tires . There are boulders the size of cars that get rolled down through there , works like a hammer mill on anything in the way . $18k loss in total , lesson learned ...

Yep. I drove thru a flooded wash when I was young and invincible... Water up to my windows... Lucky for me, it wasn't too swift. When I got home, I had to dry the distributor out to get it to start. I was very lucky... Lesson learned.

In the DNWR, I've seen one area where the 1/4 mile wide flood came down a talus slope... Not even in a drainage. Well, it is now... In another area, Morman Well Road IS a drainage... Sawmill Canyon... While I haven't seen it with water in it, it carries an enormous amount of water... Wipes out much of the road every time.

And... Most importantly, as you said, you can be washed away by runoff, from a storm you didn't even know occurred.

I'd rather stay home...
