I'd like to nominate myself as the guy who should ask all the dumb questions over the next year or so.

So - after figuring out where my transmission fill plug is located, I removed it and what I think is transmission/gear lube came out immediately - so I'm assuming it was full. But it was pretty thin and the color of 9 month old baby vomit (see also, sort of like a banana milkshake color/consistency). Is this a type of tranny fluid, or is it some fluid that should have been replaced 10 years ago?

a lighter color would indicate the possibility of water contamination. drain it all and replace. let the drained fluid sit and see if it seperates

X2 possible water contamination. Would not run if any further until replaced the fuild. I would run a 50% ATF and 50% 90 weight gear for a while not pushing it to hard. ATF will help clean it up. Drain, fill with 90 weight gear. Can't remember is this the original three speed or the later type. If later I wouldn't put to much effort into cleaning the transmission. Starting looking for a replacement. Original is harder to find and would be thinking about pulling it and inspecting the inside.

Transmission

Thanks for the help guys. I sorta figured there was something wrong with the baby vomit yellow gear oil :D I'm going to do what you suggest tonight, then run it again and see how it sounds, recheck for consistency and then maybe post again.

LITP: the engine in it is a late 60's F155 but I have an original F135 with Bell Housing/Tranny & T/C waiting for my rebuild. Between both full engine/drivetrains I have enough for period correct, and what I don't have - I will buy. Will go back to 3 on the tree shift, etc. etc. Long road but fun road ahead of us. Ahahaha.. - no, the 'us' was not a mistake.

Having FUN !

Hadn't posted in a while, so I thought I'd check in. Most of you know my plan, and it's going well so far. I've been driving my '62 FJ40 every day, having a BLAST with it. I put on a temporary H/L bezel, wired the brake lights, changed all fluids (there WAS water in the tranny, but not much) and have installed the fan shroud (thanks SPLANGY). Here's a pic of me with my best hunting buddy.

I'll drive this until first snowfall here in S. Kentucky, then it goes into the garage for a full frame off restoration. Having fun with it as-is has made me really appreciate this beast - and I am more excited than ever to begin restoration.

Okey Dokey .... selling my 1962 FJ40 on eBay now ... long story. Probably not unlike a thousand other's ya'll have seen on these threads the last few years. Money, WIFE .... money. WIFE .... and well, Wife. Guess we'll see what happens. I either sell it, or I put it in the garage for 10 years until after my kids are out of college. Sucks.

I notice that you wrote WIFE bold twice .... Is that screaming outloud ? Sometimes I yell WIFE .... But.... It gets me nowhere :)

I hear ya pain

Life doesn't throw curve balls at me... I get the split finger fastball to my head LOL
