I understand 'your' goals... my personal concern for the cross support is not for a leg sticking out/in, or tree limb coming in, it is from a side hit from another vehicle and it seems the addition of 1 cross support would mitigate that to an extent. adding that I doubt would effect #1 (just 1 tube will not block view) or #2 (adding 1 tube would not make it harder to close 1 handed) and certainly not #3 (as I have seen others with 1 extra support and they also look cool like yours do). I think the 1 thing it would affect is weight.

do not get me wrong... I like them and, as you recall from my PM, wanted to look at buying them but for the hinge issue for me and others without a pair of door side hinges sitting around, it is just something I think and feel when I look at that larger than expected void.

there are so many production half doors out there to choose from, no reason to take a nice pair of rare tube doors

Excuse me, but I call bull s*** on this claim. Could you please provide links to the many production hard half doors that are out there???????

I never said anything about "types".. I mean how many "types" could there be? diamond plate, aluminum.. what other options do you expect for 'hard half doors' - titanium?

I merely made the point, which was missed, that finding tube doors for an FJ40 is nearly impossible... 1 company, just now in this month of 2007, is making them in production now. period. versus numerous pairs, no less than 5-6 different ones, of hard half doors with skins available as seen above.

78-FJ40 apologizes for the hijack dude.....

i wasn't talking about "types"...all the aluminum ones are the same and those are the "only" solid (v. just one panel) hard doors out there right now. and just like you, i'm picky about the doors i run and the diamond plate ones just aren't up to snuff.

i agree that there aren't many/any options for tube doors that are in full production outside of MT...but there aren't really all that many options for quality solid half doors either.

not tryin to start anything here, but i know you've been lookin for tube doors for a long time...a real long time, ha ha. and you've def been keeping all options well represented on mud here.

what's stopping you from goin to some fab shop and getting them to make you a one-off set?
there's got to be a shop near to you that could do that, right? and they would get you everything that you wanted, hinge and latch wise, as well as have the tubework in a way that suited you...

thanks... and yeah, I have.. for years now. too long - as you point out :) - actually and it just stuns me that as of 2007, 1 company is actually now producing them. starting just this month.

this is true to a point. the issue is not so much that I could not find someone around here to do it, it is that the 3 places I have approached about it are (1) very primadonna here in SoCal given all the 'trophy' trucks they see and work on that (2) they want an arm and a leg to make such a thing - I mean, over the top $$ like they are the local version of OC Choppers fabbing me some incredible piece of fabbing artwork. I really believe I have in my head the exact design and setup I want that would work great - even looked at getting them done in mass in Pakistan - but it is a matter of finding that right person/shop to pull it off with me.

almost weekly, as I revisit this topic to stay abreast of it, I say to myself "wantatlc, just take a few welding classes at a community college and build those mofos your damn self". but..... here we are....

I don't understand the want for have doors anyway.

because some people fell safer and could drive better..... I could drive with out them but when I get to the trail. I would maybe put my feet out and get hit and that would not be fun...

how much did does door run you?

more like... he has threatened :D to make them since last year. but if you follow the other Tube Door threads (under Vendor and here in 40 tech), no real admitted activity on his end on this in awhile. those 1 set you see are his first prototype, but no actual production to sell. they are on his website yes, but not in production.

Im not sure where your going for prices, but there are some fab shops that will do that work for you for fair prices, I had some custom tube work done for a steal in the IE, if your interested let me know, or buy the steel and me some beer and we will get them done
FWIW, I have the MT's and think their the bomb

and a nice set of half doors too

78-FJ40 Man your truck looks outstanding and I look forward to wheeling with you on the trail.

it is from a side hit from another vehicle and it seems the addition of 1 cross support would mitigate that to an extent.

No door for a FJ40 is going to help with side impact, no matter how it’s made. Hinges and latches will fail first. Hip guards on a roll cage is the only thing that will start to help with side impacts, and that’s minimal. (This statement is only an opinion and not a legal binding statement as to…. Bla bla legal, leagal etc.)

'maybe' so BUT I do not see the downside of just 1 extra cross support, but I do see the upside. ever watched accidents in slow motion? :censor: happens you could never expect or account for. i errant projectile item through that large of a space.. maybe. who knows. but a I said, I just do not see the downside.

dude, if you think those tube doors are going to do anything in a side impact execpt fold in and hit or stab you, you need to think again. The little door latch and door jam isnt going to do anything to keep it there. I bet you could kick the door in with your foot if you wanted. I can with my half doors.

The only thing you have going for you in an accident is that youre probably a little taller than whatever is hitting you. Aside from that, there isnt much.

The tube doors are good for resting your arm on, look cool, keep your legs in a little, and *might* keep the rocks from coming in and tearing your seats when youre squeezed up against them.

guess you missed the previous posts about the fact I TRIED to buy them!!! but then learned that you must own your own door side hinges to mount to the MT tube doors to then mount to the rig. as I do not, and do not want to make these a $450 pair of doors - 4 hinges ain't cheap - I had to pass. BUT, what.... u don't think I already considered that....pleezzzz

UPDATE: bought them,, installed them, see here https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?p=2440691
