So I'm getting ready to purchase a 2 Jerry can set (one water, one gas) and am wondering how I should go about mounting them outside the FJ60 if I don't have a fancy swing-out bumper.

Has anyone ever done this or have opinions on good ways to mount them?

I didn't want to put them inside due to gas smell (potentially) but if that's the only way...

Thoughts?

Roof rack is one way. There are also some gas can holders that fit into a 2" receiver hitch. That said, I have carried good fuel cans inside my 60 and no smells. You need a good seal obviously.

I won't be able to fabricate. Looking around online I haven't found the right 2 can trailer hitch mount yet.

It's looking like I'll need to get the normal mounts and bolt them to the side panels in the back of the FJ60.

Long term, I'll end up buying a new rear bumper or getting on built with the swing-out for the spare tire and 2 cans etc. That's a ways down the road though.

these guys have a fairly inexpensive mount for the 10L and 20L Jerry cans. not quite what your looking for but might get you part way

great folks BTW, I have bought 10 cans(and spouts) this year from them, I really like the 10L size. I have used the old surplus Jerry cans for 20 years, some were getting kinda beat but still function 100%(with a mallet) so it was time to replace some and add some 10L, also gave a few to friends

have not tried the mount however

Although carrying 5 gallons of gasoline inside of jerry cans inside the cab is shunned upon by civilized and primitivel man alike, I've done it plenty of times. 5 gallons is no big deal.

Get two of those low profile plastic 2-1/2 gallon jerry cans that have no venting and no fancy schmancy spouts. Most hardware stores carry them for lawn mower fill ups.

Those two small Jerry cans are really easy to store and are much more stable than a big honkin 5 gal job. To be extra safe you could store those 2 Jerry cans in their own dedicated storage container. Though I never did.

You'll only be carrying them full of gas for a very short while. Once you've burned through 5 gallons in the main tank, just pull over for a moment to dump the jerrys back in the main tank.

No big deal.

Just reading the link:

The insides are lined with petro resistant alkyd ammonia based paint to resist internal rusting. Do not use for water storage!

Annoying are the different size sprout that all look alike but dont fit so buy them with the can.
I have 10 and 20 liters inside on rubber mat (parking in city) or on top (sleeping in car), they dont smell if not leaking after usage.
Of course they both have different spouts :bang: :censor: :skull:

When there are enough fuel stations around I dont want to carry to much fuel.
Water is in a plastic 20 liter can with valve.

I would vote that a sane person not carry around gas quantities of any size in the interior of the vehicle.... just not a smart move.

Can't really chime in on where to put the cans. I've used my roof rack and have also carried them inside. No big deal for me. To me, the more important thing is what kind of "Jerry" can you are using. I recommend either the military Scepter containers or the old NATO ones. I've used the NATO ones for many years. They don't leak or emit any gas odor. I would expect the Scepter ones to be the same.

Just make sure any carrier is sized for the can you want to use, Jerry, Blitz and others may be slightly different sizes and there bases are different. I would only use Nato type Jerry cans myself, they don't leak, don't smell and have a killer spout, they pour fast

Before I got a 4x4 labs bumper I carried 10 gal of gas and 5 gal of water in the back strapped down. Never had an issue. I'm sure it's a safety hazard but you can get away with it for a few times a year until you invest in a rear swingout.

I have some scepter ones and they are not 100% odor free unfortunately. They are well used and gaskets are good. For me they would definitely have to be carried outside of the vehicle. Although thats not an option in california apparently and that could make things problematic for some

Didn't realize that was the case. No external fuel canisters on vehicles in CA any longer? Guess that shoots some holes in the sway away I had planned for my '83 4x pickup..

Dispenser systems related to emissions. [emoji49] Determined for us by state to be the ultimate evil.

you can carry fuel canisters just not the good ones like scepter. You know how california is, anything to make your life more difficult, arbitrary and bureaucratic. Plus just like most states and municipalities they love the hidden tax system that is giving out tickets.

junk and junk(pretty sure they are Chinese) there are a ton of knock offs. another brand is Waiven? they have a CARB approved spout(which must mean it sucks)

the link I gave earlier are about the best quality you can get, made in Latvia(which is actually a NATO country, unlike China), I would go as far to say they are better than the original german/swiss cans which I have loved and abused for decades. They ship free and fast, nice folks, if you call sales you get someone with a nice southern accent......you can hear them packing up stuff in the background.......and its not in India.
