More fuel range for the late 100... Or sell it and start over? (1 Viewer)

Well that's really interesting. Earlier this year I contacted their support site. I just took these screenshots from the exchange...

That "FIT UP TO MAY 2005" text was an actual copy/paste from their website at that time.

FWIW, I did not buy the vehicle from that photo... I wound up buying a different LX470 with a date of of 08/04.

That tank better fkn fit.

Let us know either way.

For sure.

Was there a change to the fuel system for MY 2005? (edit <--- that's meant to mean "Model Year 2005")

Would think the stock part numbers would be different if that were the case.

The 100 series range is pitiful, agreed there. My Tesla in the winter has more range than the 100 on a good day, lol.

That said, are you often ready to go longer than a full tank without having to stop to pee or at least stretch out your legs? I'd rejoice if my family made it more than 90 minutes without having to stop for somebody to eat/drink/pee.

I wouldn't sell the car over it. Configuring a custom tank or overcoming the jerry can/rotopax placement challenge seem like a lot less work than changing platforms.

I think the only way a vehicle swap makes sense is if you can swing $50k+ on something much newer and objectively better.

I agree with the comment to spend the saved $$ on coffee. If you double the tank size, best case, you save yourself 15 minutes every 4-6 hours. Seems like a relatively minor thing. If your overland adventure travel is that tight on time that it's a major detractor from the experience, I'm not sure you're doing it right, haha.
Exactly. I did the math based on our admittedly low annual mileage of our LX, gas at $5/gallon, and a $20k sale value of our LX towards buying a new $70+ turbo diesel Tahoe that reportedly gets twice the mileage of our LX. If I forked out the $50k difference in pricing in cash, I found that It would take 17+ years for that trade to recover that $50k in fuel savings. Didn't even calc in insurance on new $70+k SUV, crazy Calif DMV bend over fees, etc. I dunno...maybe at some point I'll be more motivated to swing it but right now I'm just not seeing the value there.

i had a ‘17 Escalade ESV concurrently with my 04 LC100 (2004). By the time the Escalade hit 70k it was Obvious the LC was built better.

The LRA tank for my ‘05 LX470 without issue. Installed as of today, no problem.

FWIW, their support said they were aware of a shop that make them fit in the ‘06 and ‘07 models…
Any way you can get the shop name or info to share with us 06 owners? That would be great if someone has figured this out.

Tried a 120 Prado tank? Here in Aus they are a budget swap a ofr 80s and 100s. Cost me less than $30 for the tank, $20 of steel and a day should have it mounted in my case. Note I already have a rear tank so the fuel filler/lines swap over easily.

Well they didn't mention it. Their quote was

In fact, we heard that a shop swapped an older sending unit into a post May 2005 LC/LX and made our 40 gallon main tank work (not that we are advertising it).

(I understand "post May 2005 LC/LX" to mean the date of manufacture... and I'm under the impression May 2005 was the last date of manufacture for the 2005 model year... meaning anything with a manufacture date after that would be an '06 or '07 model year).

LRA’s website says May of 2004.
Maybe it was just a simple mix up.

I’ve decided to go for it and document what it takes.

Boy, that thing looks cool! I ended up with the auxiliary tank (UZJ100 is a '99) and I've loved it so far, the peace of mind of 48 gallons of fuel on long trips is worth it. Keep us posted!

Would love to do something like this. But: California...

According to LRA the bigger main tanks are supported on an 07 now. I recently had an exchange with their support team.
