Fly on out Smitty. I've got a shotgun seat ready for you. Bring your own tent tho! There's not enough room for two sleeping in the back of my truck!
We'll feed you.

Some of us have real 8-5 jobs Stan!

WHAT?!?! you don't have to be to work until 8:00, is that what they mean when they say "banker's hours":flipoff2:

I want to get out so badly, I'm even thinking about it (a little) and I just did this run on the last full moon;)

Stan are you referring to the GPX file? I understand the iphone uses proprietary software for it's navigation system. However Tom Tom makes an app for the iphone but again I do not not know anything about the file format used. There are several programs available for converting the files, you have to do a bit of research though.

Or did you want to upload my pretty picture of the Mojave?

I am interested in using my iPhone too, but was hoping to import the file into Google Earth. It looks like the mobile app is pretty limited.

How about leaving early afternoon wednesday, say 2:00pm

We are planning to leave Wed eve after traffic and stay at the Avi Casino. You can call me when you get there if you find someplace better: 949 nine two two BOYD. I figure we'd meet in the morning for breakfast and head out together.

We've got the room if you could pull it off! I'm bringing Bubba and he could use some company!

Hey, that looks like my Dire Strait's DVD:flipoff2:

Hey guys, enjoy yourselves out there!!

Wow, thats a great offer Smitty! Get one of those hoity-toity investors to sponsor you! Call it a "business trip" :D

Now I see a plan beginning to come together! Very short notice but all I need is a plane ticket, tent, clothing, and a client. Who should I send some paperwork to? I am even willing to pick it up in person on the left coast. I have some great institutional investment strategies that I am able to bring to the private investor!

ha!

Soda Dry lake is closed as of right now. By the time you guys go, hopefully it will dry up.

Mojave Road in 9 hours - Expedition Portal Forum

:crybaby: Doubtful at this point after all the rain last night and more/bigger storm coming in tonight.

On the bright side, I downloaded Scott's file and all his waypoints. Funny thing - the XML file downloaded was 84kb. Once opened in Mapsource and added the 4 sections of topo map needed and then saved in the Mapsource format, the whole file to download to the gps was only 17kb...go figure. I guess it's all in the format of the file? Easily figured out how to 'show' all the waypoints in Mapsource and then added the topo maps to the file an downloaded the whole thing to the GPS. Sent the file to Stan also as he's got a Streetpilot also. We'll see how the topo's look next Thursday! Thanks Scott. Learned some about Mapsource. Looks like you can take something like the SoCal Backcountry book and all the waypoints it provides, input those into a new file in Garmin's Mapsource, plot them onto the map, add those sections of topo maps and download the file. Looks time consuming to type in all those coordinates, but beats the hell out of getting lost!

Soda Lake was closed when we went through it 8 days ago. We crossed it anyway and were fine. Unless it really pours out there they should be fine if they stick to the main track. No donuts or wandering. Don't forget to bring a rock for the pile!

Glad the GPX file worked for you guys. Boyd you should be able to load the KMZ file on your iphone for Google Earth but will you have internet service out there in order to use Google Earth?

interesting, when I opened up the gpx file in GoogleEarth, it was just the track. But when I opened the kmz file there was a ton of points of interests and pics in the general area around the Mojave Road. Were these actually buried in the file or was there some code that pulled them from Google Earth?

The coverage looks way better than I thought it would; the only area without coverage seems to be the Mid Hills area. Real world will probably be worse than advertized - we'll see.

I still can't figure how to import files into the mobile application and as far as I can tell it isn't an option.

Soda Lake was open as of yesterday and the NPS didn't think this storm would drop enough rain to close the lake. I'll check again before we leave.

Eric-

Look at the menu on the left of your GE screen, you can eliminate the KMZ file by unchecking it. This way you can see what data is Google Earth and which came from the KMZ file. The photos are user added content from Google not the KMZ file. They can be added and removed by using the GE menu. You can also expand and contract +/- the file and use different parts of it.

The KMZ file I posted is a compilation and is enormous. As I said in an earlier post you can use the GE menu on the left of the screen to add and subtract data you find useful or not. Since GE does not recognize all file formats, I'm guessing that's why your only seeing the track using the GPX?

Anyone use street view? You can "drive" down Black Canyon and Lanfair roads and check out the Mojave. Amazing technology or big brother?

Hope that helps......Sorry for the hijack Boyd. :hillbilly:

What does our head count look like?
Shared meals?
Fire wood?

Head Count thus far:

Boyd + Bubba FZJ80
Josh + Taco F250
Gordon Jeep GC (confirmed, but will probably bail last minute)

Brent FZJ80
Stan + Jeff? FJC

I'm up for sharing meals. I'll marinate some chicken for 1 night.

Lows temps are projected for the low to mid 30's, so everybody bring (lots of) wood!

Brent - are you bringing Sputnik?

If you're planning on camping at Caruther's, it will probably get pretty cold but just remember, it's not the cold that gets you...it's the wind. Bring windproof cloths:D

Brent - are you bringing Sputnik?

There were fire rings everywhere we camped so you probably won't need it unless you're looking for a little extra warmth.

Yes - I'm bringing Sputnik. She does a better job on fires than the fire rings do at radiating HEAT!

With only 5-6 of us, I won't bother with the apple cobler. One less box of gear to heft on the roof rack not having to bring the dutch oven.

I will bring the 3 burner stove, cast iron griddle and grill that go on it.
