So it begins. And of course, as soon as the truck is down, it snows and the wife needs her car back. Getting past Murphy's law, this is pretty exciting for me, finally regearing to 4.88s. After removing the CVs, the front ADD just pops right out (yeah right). Here's something for all you IFS haters.

As for the rear, after you disconnect/remove everything, the e-locker third sits patiently in a box, minus e-locker.

I'm sore, I'm tired, and I'm a little cold. I hope in the next days I can post some progress with minimal profanity. I know it's not a cruiser, but maybe the old and wise will fit it interesting, or amusing.

:bounce::bounce2:

Lookin' good!!

You forget to pick up the heater?

Did the inverse Torx socket fit?

Its best do plan on working when its snowing out. lol So you putting a locker in the front diff to?

Since it was 60 on Sat I didn't bother, but it got cold Sun. I had to go buy a set of reverse Torx sockets. I put the people at Sears in a tail spin:rolleyes:, luckily I found it.

No locker in the front, my money tree never sprouted and besides, the front CVs tend to protest an ARB. I'll do a lefty or crawler or a SAC before that.

Looks like fun, tearing into the front end like that.

Are you going to set up the gears yourself or send it off to Zuke?

I am curious as to how your mileage changes after the regear.

Are you going to put in new CVs, bearings as well?

The pictures mean something to me.

No news is bad news

Generally no news is good news, not in this case. We got the rear set up, all new cryo'd bearings and tore the front apart and cleaned everything thoroughly. Bruce has photos as I forgot my camera the first day. Anyway, as I'm looking at the ring gear on the front carrier, and glance at my new ring gear I get that horrible sinking feeling. One is reverse cut, the other isn't! *#@*

I bought them from a guy who bought them from PORC. He never got a chance to install them, so I bought them at a discount (or so I thought). Anyway, PORC sent him the wrong crap (big surprise) and I had to order the right ring & pinion (from JT's of course). So I got boned assuming that PORC had sent him the right crap, and of course didn't realize that until I got mine apart. So hopefully my Precisions will be here today, and we can put it all back together and get things broke in.

On a brighter note, got my rear all buttoned up, axles back in, brakes bleed, a few other things completed, and just waiting on the front.

Moral of the story, for TRD Tacomas and 3rd gen 4rnrs, the rear is the same old school 8" with an e-locker (fairly easy to work with, as long as you have ALL the right tools). The front is a high pinion 7.5 clamshell with reverse cut gears.

So now I have a new set of standard cut 4.88s for the 7.5 IFS (i.e. pre 95) if anyone is interested, or knows of anyone else. Damnit.

You're hallucinating!

Our local version of Zuk, Bruce, and I stand around and ask questions.

Me too.

I rebuilt the CVs, prefer Toyota, new cryo'd bearings.

The pictures mean something to me.

And I'll post some more, eventually.

Bummer with the gears. I had the same sort of thing happen to me when I bent my axle. Ordered one from Superior, then the fun games began. No one could seem to get the new bearings pressed on. So I miked the new axle and it had dimensions that were close, but it wasn't a Tacoma axle. My truck was ripped apart for 2-3 weeks. Ended up ordering a new axle from Toyota at well over $400. Superior tried to get me to jury rig, ie use one type of bearing, different seals, etc etc etc. IMO a logistical nightmare if it ever broke again.

Anyways, I can lament. Looking foreward to the pictures.

Peanut Gallery :flipoff2:

So shortly after I posted my woes, my new Precision gears arrived from JT's Diffs (less than 24 hours). Wow! Called Bruce and we were back in business. Only had to go to Eddy's for one part, a driver's side axle seal that they just happened to have in stock (and cheaper than others).

We had to make some special tools for pressing out and in the special shims, but now I have all new cryo'd bearings in. I was amazed at how well the front setup went, especially after all the horror stories of how hard they are. I was so happy I got everything buttoned up Sat night.

Sun I went out several times taking things easy, and heard no whines or unexplainable noises. So far so good. :bounce::bounce2: Diffs get warm, but I can hold my hand on them.

Drove to work today, and WOW! Now OD will hold and the torque converter isn't constantly unlocking at the slightest breeze. RPMs are perfect at around 2475-2500 at 70mph (where I calculated them prior to this).

Can't wait to get it offroad and try out the low range. I'll get some pics up once I get a free moment, and Bruce has some he'll email me.

:steer::cheers:

There's something about a man in flannel wearing gloves that gets my blood pumping.

I'll locate my GPS so you can check your speedo.

You forgot about the complementing beanie.

Yes please on the GPS, I'm off by a good 10-15mph. I'll have to remove my speedo gear to see which one I have, I may be able to correct it by ordering one with a few more teeth (fancy math calculations), but they only go up so high.

Otherwise, it's awesome driving down the road in this ridiculous wind and the torque converter stays locked. I keep anticipating the unlock, then the eventual shift down.

You have 255/85/16s? Looks like it was a fairly straight foreward install.

I may end up going a similar route sometime this next spring. I think I may have crushed the crush spacer a little, my dif in the rear has about 1/4-3/8s inch play that it didn't have a year ago. So, if I am going to have it apart and I am running 32" tires, I might as well look into regearing, I may go with 33" the next set of tires.

You have 255/85/16s? Yes, came out to 33.2".

Looks like it was a fairly straight foreward install. As long as you have all the right tools. It wasn't easy, and it's best to have two people, especially with the front clamshell.

4.56s would have still been lower than stock by a fraction, but with all the extra weight, and the added desire to go slower in low I opted for one more step. I'm very happy with my decision, plus the cruising rpms are perfect now.

Got a Scangauge II for Xmas, for you OBD II people. What it does is everything, and allows me to calculate percent error of my speedo, via GPS, as well as diagnose any trouble codes. Of course I'll get some pics, but after the regear my speedo was off -10%

Back to smoking meat.

be careful "smoking meat" will give you the munchies

Smokin' pot gives you munchies, smokin' meat will make you crave BBQ. Munchies implies you'll eat anything and/or everything in sight. To fully enjoy smoked meat one needs to be more of a connoisseur of delicate cuisine.

Back to the tech. Congrats on the Scangauge, Santa :princess: must have thought you were a good boy this year. :grinpimp: I assume by your post you figured out the GPS issue? So, now you're indicating faster than you're traveling? That'll help correct the severe overdrive the tires caused with the stock gearing, sorta like eventual self correction with regard to the mileage on the truck. You wouldn't want to fracture Federal law now would you? Does Mr. T offer other gears for the VSS on the Taco's to correct for a 10% error?
