Probably for the same reason they put the filter sideways, so it drools oil all over the side of the engine when you remove it.

I actually prefer to use a 14mm gear wrench to remove to drain plug. Less chance of it slipping off and buggering up the plug, busting your knuckles too.

100% agree on the wrench. Much easier.

Also from personal experience of working for Toyota and wrenching for a number of years, I can say that someone working on the vehicle after the fact was on the list, but I don't think it was very high on it...

Ever change a fuel filter on an 80? :bang:

Or on any 22RE motor? The fuel filter on my 80 is on the passenger side frame rail. :p Actually pretty easy to get to.

And to the OP, 14mm 6pt wrench works well, and I keep scrape pieces of cardboard around to wedge over the diff to help keep the oil headed into the drain pain.

I should have specified the 1FZ. And yes the 22RE is in roughly the same spot. I think the RE is a little easier tho. Still a pain either way.

Yes, I use to just let the oil hit the front diff and then drain into the pan. I have since taken a flexible plastic cutting board from the kitchen (don't tell the wife) and cup it and it acts like a funnel into the oil drain pan. Much easier and less mess.

Low range off-road sells, or use to, a 19mm oil drain plug. Much easier to get a wrench on it with some leverage to take it on and off easy...
