First I have to say I am pretty excited about the prospects of benig able to obtain this pig.:bounce::bounce::bounce:

I have always loved the look of the 55, I bought one pretty much sight unseen (only had a few photos) before the high speed internet, and got a vehicle that I considered a wreck.. more work than I had expected.. fastforward 10 years, I have a chance to get another pig but this one does not have a motor, transmission or transfer case.

The first series of many questions I have is:
will a motor/trans/transfercase out of an early 60 (1981) fit into a 70-72 pig without modifications?

or will I need to put an older style transfer case on the transmission?

will the shifter line up correctly to the transmision hump hole in the 55? or was the bellhousing different thickness?

what about the motor mounts?

70-72 had column shift, so there wouldn't be a hole in the floor. if it was converted to floor, but still had 3spd, shifter won't match up. don't know if the rear tube xmember will be in the way, but fj60 setup would be a great way to go. you'll have to deal with the driveline flanges, but you can swap the pig slipshafts on the 60 drivelines and have them shorted

yea I had not thought of that, it is a column shift in the 55

and was it a vaccum shift transfer case in the 55 too?

I have a donor 60 for an axel swap too if I choose to do that...but that is a loooong way off

:wrench:2F will fit in the 70-72 piggy:hillbilly:........have a 79 2F with GB & TC in a 69 body........might have some problems with air cleaner clearance if you use the stock 2F air cleaner and the "bumpless" early pig hood.......GB & TC?.....didn't have any problems with these that I can recall...BUT did have another floor plate to use from the 79 donor........:hhmm:if yours has the column shifter might need to modify the floor a bit for the shifters......." cut holes" :hillbilly:might check the body transplant thread here on the 55 forum...HTH
Lou

You will also loose the e-brake on the rear of the transfer case. It is possible to install one on the '60 transfer case but it's not the same as the '55.

Good call on the parking brake.

If you have access to the rear axle off the 60, I *think* you can transfer the rear drum assemblies onto your 55 axle and get a parking brake out at the rear wheels.

Can anyone verify?

You would want to confirm the bolt patterns on the backing plates are the same for 40/55 to 60.

huh?! on the air cleaner,, I wonder if I can get one of those dohickies to use an F air cleaner, I have a few of those...

on the ebrake, I have access to a 60 rear so I can convert and I can even install a floor ebrake handle, but good call I had not thought of that

do you see any issues with how wide the split tcase is vs the 55 frame?

I kinda figured I would have to mod the floor/tranny hump when I was reminded the early 55 is column shift... might I have some clutch issues, wasnt the 60 slave on the ps, and the 55 on the ds?

Ill look for the body transfer thread
THANKS!

I think I'd be tempted to use a bellhousing from a 4 speed so you don't need the tranny belly mount. This will allow the engine/tranny/transfer to just "drop in".

the later 2f with overhead air cleaner setup was in the pigs with the "hump hood"...it had a big bump to clear the air cleaner. i've heard that some have seen the early model clear the 2f cleaner with no issues tho. if not, just look for a 75+ hood.

as for the slave..easy fix...not too hard to make a line to run from master wherever you want. you can even match the fittings to a premade line at local checker/vautozone/pep boys/etc stores.

I think I'd be tempted to use a bellhousing from a 4 speed so you don't need the tranny belly mount.

not sure what you are refering to here, the motor from the 60 will already have a 4 speed bell housing and a 4 speed transmission

would the bellhousing be different from a 40/55/60?

earlier 2f/4spd setups have the rear mounts on the bellhousing, while the split case setups (like fj60) have the rear mounts off the tranny (see the xmember under the middle of your donor fj60)

oooooo....I did not know that...thanks! so I still need an early 2f bellhousing, or to move the motor mounts on the frame...

Exactly! I did the second option 'cause I was also swapping engines from a 2F to a 3B diesel. I have a cut down '60 series tranny mount under mine. The '55 frame is about 4-6" narrower.

Sounds good Steve, let me know if you see it, otherwise I will make plans to move what I have to, or if the stock ones wont be in the way, I can just add motor mounts to the frame at the transmission from my donor 60,, leaving the 55 frame stockish

I guess I see adding mounts not as bad as cutting some off and moving them, but either way I can make something work. once I get the 60 (monday) I will determine if I need to split the engine from the transmission. The engine was just rebuilt, but I found some extra seals and a transfercase input cover gasket, so the PO may have been planning a transmission or xfer case re-seal....
I am pretty sure the clutch, pressure plate and TO bearing have less than 200 miles on them...

I doubt you can leave the stock mounts in place and use the '60 series mounts. I tend to think they would get in the way otherwise.

Personally, if you're going to use a 2F I'd use the bellhousing from a 4 speed '55. Less cutting and mods and therefore probably better. I would NOT use both mounts though.

I was not going to use both sets at the same time, I guess I was thinking if I ever had to change back for some reason to a bellhousing mount.

Yep it is probably not as involved as I remember separating a transmission from the engine to change the bellhousing out..

Congrats.... good to see another might join the UC herd.

as far as the 2F swap, dont forget youll need to ditch the Fan Clutch setup for a clutchless one and you will need the 75 water pump pulley. Sounds like a great project though

and the split case should fit fine, southerncruiser62 has an H55 and split case in his 55. I had read the 60 axles wornt worth the hassle but youll get the e-brake back and 3'' wider track so all in all sounds like a good plan.

why would you want the 62 axels? for the rear sway bar? I think I have one extra laying around somewhere,, unless I took it to the junk yard last year....
