May Long Weekend Coastal Cruiser trip to the Cariboo
This year's May Long Weekend Coastal Cruiser run was up to the South Cariboo area north of Big Bar to the Gang Ranch area of the Churn Creek Provincial Protected Area on the Fraser Canyon. There were 14 people--seven CC members and 7 family and friends. Members were Barry P (BJ42), Chris H, Bill W (BJ74), Mike M (BJ75), Martin S (BJ40), Derek A (FJ40), and new member Garry Broeckling and his wife Marie (BJ42). Other participants were Derek's mother, brother, and sister, plus Aron, Jerry & Lorainne, all in Jeeps.
Barry, Chris and Bill came up via Squamish, Duffy L road, Lillooet, and gravel travel through Pavillion, Big Bar road, Jasmine Road, Canoe Creek and Dog Creek Road. Mike, as well as Derek and co came up the Fraser Canyon and turned West north of Clinton. Mike had alternator trouble on the way up but fortunately carried a spare.
We made camp on a Fraser sandbar just south of the new steel suspension bridge leading to the Gang Ranch. The site was very similar to the Big Bar site we camped at last year. It even had a deluxe log out-house probably built for Gang Ranch employees. Across the river was an unstable eroded hillside cliff that had rocks rolling down into the river and traversing Moutain Goats . The weather was very good, except for the wind storm Saturday night that blew down three cottonwood trees, one hitting Garry's vehicle and two falling close to tents. Fortunately nobody was hurt. Garry's vehicle received a mangled roll bar but was driveable.
Over Saturday and Sunday there were two out-back trips up behind Black Dome Mountain in the Camelsfoot Range. At one point, vehicles had to cross Higgenbottom Creek and Mike had to get out his chainsaw and gum boots to cut up fallen logs from the creek. Sunday's excersion took them farther up the trails to Yodel Camp up to around 5800 feet, getting close to Windy Ridge. Garry also had alternator trouble too, but carried on anyway. Mike encountered some Grizzly bears and a lone hiker in the Higgenbottom Creek area.
Traffic coming down the Fraser Canyon Monday morning was light and even the Highway 1 Freeway was not bad coming home. It may be that people are not travelling as much on long weekends with the high gasoline price now. The weekend was a success and next year we may venture even farther North.
