After 230k miles and 16 years, the fan control knob is loose. Not sure what to do.

Has anyone seen this happen and how do I fix it? Thank u.

Super easy, I just did this a few weeks ago on mine. It literally just pulls off... One of mine wasn't coming out so I got a towel and a pair of pliers to grip it gently and then it popped straight out. Once the knob is off there's a little nut underneath. Tighten it up and pop the knob back on. Mine feel new again and I imagine will last another 165k.
 
Try removing that panel to see what looks like from behind.
( insert dirty joke here.)

Might simply be a fastener that needs to be tightened.
 
Thanks. I will fix it soon. Thought I was in a jeep or rover or something with loose interior pieces. ;<)
 
^^^^^^ Haven't done it on a Land Cruiser but I did this on a Toyota Highlander with success!!!!
 
There's probably a TSB for that.

did it work? mine is the same on my 99 LC after a criminal broke in to steal my radio and ripped the whole panel off. i will try the fix tomorrow.

yotasavg is spot on. I had to do this on my son's LC a little over a year ago.

The hardest part is getting a good enough grip on the knob to pull it off. Much like yotasavg, we got them off by padding the knob with a few layers of masking tape and gently using pliers to pull the knobs off. Use a socket, to finger tighten the brass nut behind the knob.

All done, after three layers of masking tape pair of plyers (and the help of Nicholas.) it still only came a little way off. So i then used a screw driver (flat head) to get it the rest of the way off. And there was the bolt waiting to be tightened and it was really loose. Used an 11 mm socket and hand tightened, replaced knob and was as tight as day one. Now i just need some touch up paint.

Ouch! We had one HVAC knob on my son's vehicle that the previous owner had dinged up. If I remember correctly the knob part number is 5590560270 and they aren't too bad price wise ($9-12 each).

It still gets hot here. Some summers we can see 100+. And humidity... We don't have "dry heat", we have sauna. Not Florida bad, but it can get bad here too.
 
Just did this as well, used a pair of vice grips covered in tape, got them all off without a problem... my vent selector was loose but I figured I'd check all of them.
