@sogncab speaking of the height reminded me that I need to source a ladder or getting things off/on the rack would be a PITA. Thinking I will go with a telescoping ladder that I can strap on somewhere or throw in the back.

Somthing like this is what I am thinking. Collapses down to 2.25' and extends to 7.5'

I stand on my tire to reach most things.

I actually was refreshing the wood on my ConFerr rack last night with Karl’s favorite, Tung oil.

I have a ladder similar to that for getting in and out of the tent. Could be handy for the roof rack too.

I think i climbed the tire to strap crap down. The ladder would've been way smarter.

Am I Karl? Or are you Karl?

Things are still a little weird after Colorado last year.
Like the spoon, there is no Karl.

Jesus. That's the second nicest thing anyone has ever said to me.

Is it dusty in here?
Oh, the list isn’t very long.

Today's project. Move the rear axle back 1". Not a massive move but enough that I don't have to worry as much about crunching some body metal and no worries with impacting rear drive shaft. Was realitively easy. With the 4 plus flip kit already having a forward hole which are 1" center to center....1" move it is. I only had to drill a new forward hole in the spring perches. In addition to the crunch avoidance, looks so much better with the rear tires not so forward. Not centered in the wheel well, but closer. I call it good.

Planning an end of summer pavementless camping excursion with my boys up to CO in the 40. I've been pulling together some gear to make it as comfortable as possible without taking the kitchen sink.

Just added a bracket to the side of the 4plus carrier for a small 5lb propane tank. It doesn't stick out any further than the side mirror, but I'll def stay conscious of its presence in any tight spots on the old mining roads we'll be exploring.

Won't likely need all 5 lbs just running the two burner stove for some coffee and meals, but will come in handy if I want to run a small heater I have had for years. It gets chilly at night when you are up at elevation even in August.

The new awning arrived a few days ago.

Ready to get it mounted so I can do a shakedown trip before I head north. Unfortunately the load bar kits I ordered won't be here for another few weeks (fingers crossed). I wound up going with the Eezy Awn K-9 load bar setup made for a 40. I really like the profile of the feet on the gutters and it has t-slots so very easy to secure things. Too bad they are in South Africa and you have to wait on ocean containers to get here.

Test fitting the carrier I have had for years and used on other vehicles. I just ordered a drop receiver that will lower it ~2" so I can open the swingouts and doors. I can also adjust the tray to be closer to the body. Will see final adjustments once the drop comes in. This will be very handy for toting firewood, etc. on camping trips.

I hope you reconsider this, or put trailer lights on the rear of the carrier. That rig is WAY too nice to get rear ended because the brake lights are not visible! I enjoyed reading your build and absolutely loved the pics of your Dad behind the wheel <3

Good point Dianna. Hadn't really thought about the tail lights not being visible. Easy enough to add some temp trailer lights if I ever use it. Appreciate the comments on the build. My dad is my inspiration for getting this rig to this condition. He was a pharmacist by trade but there wasn't anything he couldn't fix or do. I guess its my way of showing him that I was paying attention all those years :-)

Yep. All good with the 4 plus carrier. Its the bomb! She was referencing a carrier I have that plugs into the trailer hitch receiver. Stacked with wood or anything really and it would cover the tail lights...
Yeah I backed out because I did not see the hitch carrier pic until you agreed

Nolen, you should know I am well-versed on the "formula" that includes the 4 plus carrier ;) The PO welded a bumper on my 40, I'm still hoping to hack it off some day and get the "spare tire rattler" off the back of mine. They welded a front bumper on as well :(

@MAR FJ40 it had to be over 30 years ago, but I took my son winter camping with his scout troop in Forestburg New York. That night the temperature was -1 and I am not a camper so I had a tent and my clothes and I literally wound up writing a note that if they found me in the morning dead, it’s because I froze to death. It was so uncomfortable and miserable. I did not sleep more than 20 minutes at a time. So in other words, the heater is a great idea.🔥
