I've been watching Craigslist for a while now for a used M12000 to fix up, and this one that looked to be in pretty good shape, but had a reportedly non-functional motor finally popped up. These don't come around that often at decent prices near me, so I decided to go ahead and pick it up. Hopefully it will eventually go on my 80.

Anyway, I had a chance to pull the motor off the other day, and found this mess. The brush assembly at the back of the motor broke off, and the bits got ground up by the motor, which appears to have gotten quite hot by the smell and look of things (not necessarily in that order?). It looks like the brush assembly is probably just a part that can be replaced entirely, but my real concern is that the enamel on the windings of the rotor seems to have become quite brittle and is flaking off. Based on it's condition, I think it would need to all be stripped off, and a new coating applied. Is this possible, or is it time for a new motor?

Inside of motor housing - real dirty:

Brush assembly - you can see one brush and holder is entirely missing and has been ground to a powder inside the motor:

The rest of the winch looks to be in pretty good shape, and the previous owner said he hadn't used the winch that much. He thought it had stopped working due to corrosion in the motor because of disuse. Once I get this motor situation figured out, I plan to clean and grease the rest of the winch - more of a tuneup than a full restoration as the rest of it is in pretty decent shape - and then install it.

Thanks for any input!

David
